The owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts, Jim Irsay, passed away on May 21. Irsay was sixty-five years old.
Jim Irsay started working with the Colts in 1982 and became the NFL’s youngest general manager at twenty-four and youngest NFL team owner at thirty-seven. Under his leadership, the Colts also won a Super Bowl. He also worked with famous Pro Football Hall of Famers like Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy.
The chief operating officer of the Colts, Pete Ward, broke the tragic news in a statement that read:
"We are devastated to announce our beloved Owner & CEO, Jim Irsay, passed away peacefully in his sleep this afternoon. Jim's dedication and passion for the Indianapolis Colts in addition to his generosity, commitment to the community, and most importantly, his love for his family were unsurpassed."
Irsay was taken to the hospital two years ago after he was found unconscious in his bedroom. Police said it might have been an overdose. The next month, the Colts said he was being treated for a serious breathing problem.
No cause of death has been revealed so far. As per the statement shared, Jim Irsay passed away peacefully in his sleep.
NFL figures pay tribute to Jim Irsay
Roger Goodell, the current NFL commissioner, released a heartfelt tribute that read:
"We were deeply saddened to learn of Jim Irsay's passing today. Jim was a friend, and a man deeply committed to his family, the game, the Colts, and the Indianapolis community. He led with integrity, passion and care for the Colts' players, coaches and staff, and his courageous work in support of mental health will be a lasting legacy."
Peyton Manning, a former quarterback, also paid respect on his social media:
"I am heartbroken to hear about Jim Irsay's passing. He was an incredibly generous and passionate owner and I will always be indebted to him for giving me my start in the NFL. His love for the Colts and the city of Indy was unmatched. His impact on the players who played for him will not be forgotten."
Reggie Wayne, a former player for the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL, added to his Instagram story:
"This one hurts the soul 🕊️🕊️🕊️"
The news has come as a shock to many. NFL players and other figures are sharing heartfelt messages and memories on social media, honoring Jim Irsay’s life and legacy.
Jim's family includes his three daughters and his ex-wife, Meg Coyle.
