In an interview with Men’s Health magazine, Baena spoke about his mother, who was born in Guatemala. He recalled learning to cook with her while growing up in Bakersfield, a suburban desert community near Los Angeles, according to a report in Style magazine.

Joseph Baena attended Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. After earning a bachelor’s degree in business, he graduated in 2019. His father also shared an appreciation post around that time. He wrote:
