Mexican-American professional stock car racing driver Daniel Suarez took to X on Tuesday and shared that his wife, Julia Piquet, his mother, Rosaline Garza, and his mother-in-law, Sylvia Tamsma, were involved in a serious car crash. However, he was “grateful that they are alive.”
“What is left of Julia’s Chevy Blazer. This car saved the lives of my wife, mother, and mother-in-law. Yesterday was a very scary day. Today, I’m just so grateful that they are alive,” he captioned his post, comprising images of the damaged SUV.
Julia Piquet’s father, Nelson Piquet, is a former Formula 1 world champion. Meanwhile, her mother, Sylvia Tamsma, is of Dutch descent and previously worked in the fashion industry, and was popular in the 1970s and 1980s, according to GP Blog.
According to WCNC, the multi-vehicle road accident happened along the North Carolina Highway 73 in Lincoln County on Monday. Fortunately, the occupants survived with non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital to be treated. No other person was hurt in the collision.
All you need to know about Julia Piquet’s family
Julia Piquet was born to Nelson Piquet and Sylvia Tamsma. Nelson, 73, is a former F1 Grand Prix racing driver from Brazil, who won three World Championships in 1981, 1983, and 1987. He raced from 1978 to 1991 and represented McLaren, Williams, and Lotus. Nelson Piquet was inducted into the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) Hall of Fame in 2017 for his contribution to F1, winning a total of 23 races.
Her mother worked in fashion between the 1970s and the 1980s and collaborated with several recognized brands and photographers. Later on, Sylvia moved away from the limelight and lived a private life with her family. She was Nelson’s second wife. They were married for 15 years and are now divorced.
In 2018, Julia Piquet told Fast and Fearless during an interview that her “strong character” comes from her father, which has allowed her to
“never back down from what I believe in and never be afraid to give my opinion.”
According to PEOPLE, the day before Julia Piquet’s birth, Nelson crashed his 1992 Lola-Buick during a practice session for the Indy 500. In 2023, Julia shared photos of the crash on Instagram and wrote she was
"deeply grateful dad survived this one, or I never would have had the chance to meet my hero."

Nelson Piquet and Sylvia Tamsma had two other children: Nelson Angelo Piquet, born in 1985, and Kelly Piquet, born in 1988. Nelson Jr. is a former F1 driver and current stock car NASCAR racing driver. Kelly is a Brazilian model, columnist, blogger, and public relations professional who is married to Dutch-Belgian Red Bull race car driver Max Verstappen.
Nelson Piquet, who is now a businessman, has four other children from different relationships, including Geraldo, Laszlo, Pedro Estacio, and Marco. Julia Piquet’s father owns a Brazil-based car monitoring and tracking company called Autotrac.
Julia Piquet crossed paths with Daniel Suarez in 2012 when he visited her brother Nelson Jr. in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, they didn’t understand each other’s languages at the time. Later, they reconnected in Mexico City in 2019 when Suarez was competing at the Race of Champions.
The couple began dating soon after. They got engaged in 2022 and exchanged wedding vows two years later in 2024 in Brasilia, Brazil. Julia Piquet is a former racing correspondent turned integrated nutrition health coach. She and Daniel co-starred in the second season of Netflix’s Full Speed series.
