As per recent reports, Mexican professional boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. has been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and might soon be deported to Mexico. According to his attorney, Michael Goldstein, federal agents took Chávez into custody while he was outside his home in Los Angeles. The arrest reportedly took place on July 3.

The official statement of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reads:

"Chavez is a Mexican citizen who has an active arrest warrant in Mexico for his involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives."

ICE claims that Julio may be linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, which was labeled a terrorist group by Trump. Explaining the connection to the group, the statement read:

"On April 2, 2024, Chavez filed application for Lawful Permanent Resident status. Chavez’s application was based on his marriage to a U.S. citizen, who is connected to the Sinaloa Cartel through a prior relationship with the now-deceased son of the infamous cartel leader Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman."

In January 2025, Chávez was permitted to enter the U.S. through the San Ysidro border. As per the officials:

"Following multiple fraudulent statements on his application to become a Lawful Permanent Resident, he was determined to be in the country illegally and removable on June 27, 2025."

Chávez is currently married to Frida Muñoz. Though the DHS didn’t mention Frida directly, she has been linked to the Sinaloa Cartel through her previous marriage to Edgar Guzmán López, the son of El Chapo. Their exact wedding date is unclear, but the marriage ended in 2008 when López was assassinated.

How many children do Julio César Chávez Jr. and Frida Muñoz have?

Julio César Chávez Jr. and his wife, Frida Muñoz, share two children together, a daughter named Julia Chávez and a son named Julio César Chávez III. In addition to their children, Frida is also a mother to Frida Sofía Guzmán Muñoz, her daughter from a previous relationship with Edgar Guzmán López.

Julio and Frida's exact wedding date has not been publicly confirmed. However, after much speculation about their separation, the couple confirmed it by filing for divorce in 2024. The current status of their divorce is not publicly known.

ICE took him into custody just a few days after he lost a fight to Jake Paul in California.

Julio César Chávez Jr.'s attorney, Michael Goldstein, gives his statement on the arrest

Talking about the arrest, his attorney, Michael Goldstein, said in a statement, as reported by ESPN:

"The current allegations are outrageous and simply another headline to terrorize the community."

Additionally, Chávez's family has also released a statement that reads:

"We have full confidence in his innocence. We firmly believe that the proper course is to allow the competent authorities to carry out their work without external pressure or speculation."

More details about Chávez’s possible deportation or further legal action have not been released yet.
