Kate Winslet shared her first intimate experiences as a teenager. She made this revelation while discussing her role in the 1994 film Heavenly Creatures.

On December 24 episode of the Team Deakins podcast, the Titanic actress said:

“Some of my first intimate experiences as a young teen were actually with girls. I'd kissed a few girls, and I'd kissed a few boys, but I wasn't particularly evolved in either direction.”

Winslet, who was 17 during filming, said these experiences allowed her to understand the "really intense connection" between her character (Juliet Hulme) and Melanie Lynskey's (Pauline Parker).

On the personal front, the 50-year-old is currently married to businessman Edward Abel Smith (also known as Ned Rocknroll). She has been married before Jim Threapleton and director Sam Mendes. She has a child from each marriage out of which two are actors, Mia Threapleton and Joe Anders. She welcomed Bear Blaze Winslet with her third husband.

Kate Winslet was born on October 5, 1975, in Reading, Berkshire, England. She comes from a family deeply rooted in acting.

Her parents, Sally and Roger Winslet, were stage actors, and her maternal grandparents ran the Reading Repertory Theatre. She has an older sister named Anna, a younger sister named Beth and a younger brother named Joss. Both of her sisters are also actresses.

Kate Winslet’s first serious relationship was with actor-writer Stephen Tredre, whom she met on the set of the TV series Dark Season in 1991. They dared for about four and a half years before splitting in 1995. He died of bone cancer in 1997, just as Titanic premiered. Winslet eventually missed the Los Angeles premiere to attend Tredre’s funeral.

She briefly dated actor Rufus Sewell around 1995-1996 after working together. She met her first husband, director Jim Threapleton, in late 1997 on the set of Hideous Kinky. They married in 1998 and welcomed a daughter, Mia Threapleton. The couple ultimately divorced in 2001.

Kate Winslet has often spoken about the amicable co-parenting with her ex-husband. She revealed that for the past years, she, Jim, his wife Julie Vuorinen, and their children, including Mia and Jim's daughters Olivia and Georgia, have spent Christmas together as a blended family.

Kate Winslet then met director Sam Mendes in the fall of 2001. At that time, he approached Winslet to star in two stage productions at Donmar Warehouse in London, where he was the artistic director from 1992 to 2002.

Although she turned down his offer due to her busy schedule but fell for his charm. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the Reader actress said:

“You’re not going to say ‘no’ to meeting with Sam Mendes, are ya now? Didn’t want to do the plays, definitely wanted to get his phone number.”

Winslet’s Sense and Sensibility co-star, Emma Thompson, orchestrated the spark in their relationship when she invited the two to a casual barbecue so they could meet again. Kate Winslet and Mendes married in May 2003 while on a vacation in Anguilla. They welcomed a son named Joe in December 2003. They divorced in 2011 after announcing their separation in 2010.

She married for the third time in December 2012. Her wedding ceremony with Edward Abel Smith took place in New York. The intimate ceremony was attended by Winslet’s two kids, their family and close friends. Smith was formerly known as Ned Rocknroll, a businessman and adventurer related to Sir Richard Branson.

The couple welcomed son Bear Blaze Winslet in December 2013 via emergency C-section after a house fire on the island.

Kate Winslet has collaborated with two of her children on-screen. She starred with her daughter, Mia, in I Am Ruth, a drama which explored the impact of social media on mental health. Winslet’s son, Joe Anders, appeared as Mia’s brother in the series. He also wrote the screenplay for Winslet’s directorial debut, Goodbye June.
