Laura Dahlmeier’s family mourns her death
German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier’s family is mourning her loss after her recent passing while climbing Laila Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range.
She was on the expedition with her partner Marina, who fortunately escaped with the help of rescuers; however, Dahlmeier’s body couldn’t be traced due to treacherous terrain and poor weather conditions.
In keeping with her own wishes, as instructed before her trip, her family requested that no one risk their lives to rescue her. They shared a statement on Instagram which read:
“It was Laura's clear and written wishes that in an instance such as this, no one should risk their own lives in order to rescue her. Her wish was that in this case her body should be left behind on the mountain. This is also in line with the express wishes of the relatives, who have requested Laura's last wishes be respected.”
In a tribute to her, they wrote:
“Farewell to a wonderful person! Laura enriched the lives of many, including our own, with her warm and straightforward manner. She showed us that it’s worth standing up for your dreams and goals and always staying true to yourself.”
The message added:
“We are deeply grateful, dear Laura, that we were allowed to share our lives with you. Our shared moments and memories give us the strength and courage to continue on our path.”
Laura Dahlmeier was born on August 22, 1993, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Her mother, Susi, was a skilled mountain biker who continued her sports career after giving birth to Laura.
Her father was also a mountain biker and later worked for the Customs Service's ski team. Unlike her parents, she showed interest in skiing while growing up. After graduating from high school, she joined the Customs Service ski team, after which she became a successful athlete.
Her former boyfriend, Robert Grasegger, also died in a mountain climbing incident in January 2022. At that time, they were not in a relationship. She recently set a women's world record for the fastest ascent of the Himalayan peak Ama Dablam in Nepal.
Laura Dahlmeier retired from professional biathlon in May 2019 at the age of 25. Following her retirement, she devoted her time to her love for the mountains.
