Lil Nas X was arrested and hospitalized after he was spotted roaming on a street in LA in underwear and Cowboy boots, according to a report in ABC News.
Police were alerted and called to Ventura Boulevard at 05:30 on August 21, 2025, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said. After they arrived, the singer charged at them and was eventually arrested on suspicion of battery, as per the BBC. He was then taken to the hospital for treatment of a possible overdose.
In the video, which was shared by TMZ, the Old Town Road singer is seen singing as he walks and interacting with the person filming the video.
He tells him to “come to the party” and to stop filming. When the person continues to record him, the singer snaps at him, saying, “Didn't I tell you to put the phone down? Uh oh, someone's gonna have to pay for that."
All we know about Lil Nas X’s family struggles
Lil Nas X's mother, Tamika, shares an estranged relationship with her son. Nas has previously spoken about his mother, Tamika Hill’s drug addiction and his relationship with her in the past. According to a report in GayeMagazine, the singer shared a four-part series on TikTok where he described the time when he finally made enough money to put his mother into rehab.
In 2021, a video of his mother surfaced on the internet. Shared by one of his fans, it had the caption:
“This is @lilnasx mom holding a feed me sign on a corner in Atlanta ga.”
The incident sparked online criticism as netizens criticized Lil Nas X for neglecting his mother while being a superstar. During an interview in January 2020, he said:
“I never really talk about my mom. She's an addict so we don't have the closest relationship. Even trying to get her better - things didn't quite work out. But there's still love..."
During that time, fans supported him, including Skai Jackson, who shared a post on Instagram writing:
“He did try to help her and even put her in rehab but it didn’t work. You can’t help someone that doesn’t wanna be helped. Praying for her. Let’s normalize staying out of family business. No one knows the type of relationship that they have & what he had to endure.”
In since-deleted tweets, Lil Nas X opened up about the guilt and emotional pain he feels regarding his mother's struggle with addiction. He admitted that despite all the efforts, nothing seems to work for her:
"But y’all nggas don’t know how many nights I’ve cried myself to sleep feeling guilty because nothing I tried would help my mom. Paint me as the bad guy all you want, but at the end of the day, you don’t know me outside of this internet sht."
Unlike the complex dynamic with his mother, Lil Nas X shares a supportive relationship with his father, Robert Stafford, a musician. Stafford has publicly supported his son for being concerned for his mother. In an Instagram post, his father shared that he is proud of him. He wrote:
"Despite what people say @lilnasx is the greatest kid a parent can be BLESSED with… Although his mom is in a struggle with an addiction, she’s STILL a QUEEN, and he goes through great lengths to make sure we’re taking care of.”
He added:
“Those who have family members and friends dealing with addiction understand that there ain’t enough money you can throw at this situation to make it right. I don’t usually address personal issues publicly but felt like this need to be.”
Although Stafford is a self-described Christian, the controversy around the release of his son’s Montero (Call Me By Your Name) video didn’t affect his relationship with him.
