Michael Lally is an American-born poet, a former actor, a jazz musician, an activist, and an organizer. He was born in New Jersey in an Irish-American family. Before Lally started writing, he joined the Air Force. Lally was married thrice, and his second wife was Penelope Milford. The pair was married from 1982 to 1984.
Michael is part of the Beats and the second generation of New York School poets, considered one of the major influences in American poetry. Michael Lally has written more than 30 books, a few plays, and films.

However, he seriously turned to poetry after serving. After four years in the Air Force, Michael decided to go back to school using his G.I. Bill to attend the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop.
As for his love life, Lally was married three times. His first marriage was to Carol Lee Fisher from 1964 to 1979. The second time, he married actress Penelope Milford and was together for two years. His last marriage was to Jaina Flynn. They were married for six years before they separated. Lally has three children: Caitlin, Miles, and Flynn.
In terms of his professional life, Lally has written more than 30 books so far and has even won a few awards for his work. The autobiographical South Orange Sonnets was published in 1972 and won him the New York Poetry Center Discovery Award.
