Bozoma Saint John has gained significant spotlight amidst her engagement with entrepreneur Keely Watson.

The couple shared photos from the proposal, accompanied by a caption from Bozoma Saint John announcing the news. The caption reads:

“This engagement is my testimony. You can rise from grief, reclaim your joy, and still find a love worthy of your YES. My love, Keely, you are proof that God’s timing is perfect—and so is His plan. I’m saying yes to life, to love, and to the miracle of second chances. I love you with everything that I am.”

Before Bozoma Saint John came into a relationship with Keely Watson, she was married to her ex, Peter Saint John. They were together for about 10 years until he passed away in 2013 from cancer, according to a report in People magazine.

All we know about Bozoma Saint John’s former partner Peter Saint John

Bozoma Saint John met her former partner, Peter Saint John, in a cafeteria of the building where they both worked in New York, according to her Instagram post. She explained that they first saw each other when they were ordering breakfast, and an impatient Peter yelled out from the back of the line saying:

“You look like royalty, but you don’t own this place. Hurry up and order!”

She further explained in her post that he tried hard to get her attention. In her post, she recalled how Peter persistently sought her attention and described him as 6’4”, Italian-Catholic, with green eyes and reddish-brown hair.

She made him read Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison before agreeing to go on a date with him.

According to his obituary, Peter Saint John was born in December 1969 to George and Joyce Saint John in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was the youngest of his six siblings. He later moved with his parents to West Palm Beach, Florida. He attended American University in Washington, DC, where he majored in political science.

After his graduation, Peter went on to work on a fishing vessel in Alaska. He started working in print production after returning to Massachusetts. His obituary noted:

“Peter was well-respected for his intelligence, talent, and friendly nature. Strangers and friends alike were greeted by Peter’s warm and welcoming smile.”

It added that the love between him and his partner, Bozoma Saint John, was tested by the birth and loss of their daughter Eve.

Sharing the birth story of her daughter Eve, Bozoma revealed in her memoir, The Urgent Life: My Story of Love, Loss, and Survival, that her firstborn was born prematurely when she was six months pregnant and died soon after her birth. Their second daughter, Lael, was born in May 2009. In a May 2024 Mother’s Day post, Bozoma wrote:

Her husband was diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma in 2013. He underwent months of chemotherapy until he was told “that he would not make it.”
