Raul Francisco Martínez-Malo Jr., widely known as Raul Malo, died at 60, after struggling with cancer for a long time, on December 8, 2025. The vocalist of the Grammy Award-winning country music band Mavericks, Raul, who was nicknamed El Maestro, went through a hard time suffering from cancer since June 2024. While his fans are still mourning his unfortunate death, his wife, Betty Malo, before Raul passed away, did her best to keep his fans and other music enthusiasts informed about his health condition using social media, as per Parade.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Betty Malo, Raul Malo's wife, is from New York and is the creative director at Betty Badd Couture, an accessories and jewelry brand in Nashville, Tennessee. As per reports, she is also the founder of the brand. A few days before Raul Malo died, Betty shared a photo of herself with Raul in his hospital room on her Instagram. The next day, in another post, she shared a picture of the Lucky One singer with the jazz artist, Tony Bennett. The caption of the post read:

"El Maestro hanging out with one of his huge musical influences, which had a major impact on his own singing career....@itstonybennett. As Raul spends his time now with our immediate family, please continue to lift him and everyone up in prayer as he battles #LMDCancer a rare form of brain cancer. 'To me, life is a gift, and it's a blessing to just be alive. And each person should learn what a gift it is to be alive no matter how tough things get'. By - Tony Bennett"

Born on August 7, 1965, in Miami, Florida, Raul Malo, along with drummer Paul Deakin, founded the Mavericks in 1989. Raul, who was married to Betty for over thirty years, had three children with her. While he was a celebrated singer-songwriter, Raul was also a record producer. According to Parade, he was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2024. Eventually, it was revealed that the Mavericks frontman was struggling with stage 4 cancer and LMD (leptomeningeal disease).
