Popular English actress Samantha Eggar, known for playing Miranda Grey in William Wyler's 1965 thriller The Collector, is dead. The actress passed away on Wednesday, October 15, at her home in Sherman Oaks. She was 86. Her daughter Jenna Stern broke the news to The Hollywood Reporter.

She also announced the passing on her official Instagram:

“Beautiful, intelligent and tough enough to be fascinatingly vulnerable... Samantha Eggar (1939-2025) My Mama passed away on Wednesday evening. Peacefully and quietly surrounded by family. I was there next to her ...holding her hand, telling her how much she was loved. It was beautiful. It was a privilege.”

Samantha Eggar was born Victoria Louise Samantha Marie Elizabeth Therese Eggar in London to Brigadier Ralph Alfred James Eggar and Muriel Olga Palache-Bouma. In 1964, at age 25, Samantha married actor Tom Stern. Their union produced two children: Nicolas Stern, now a producer, and Jenna Stern, an actress. After seven years of marriage, the couple divorced.

It is reported that Samantha also had an affair with actor David Hemmings in the 1970s.


Who was Samantha Eggar?

Samantha Eggar was an accomplished English actress whose film career spanned decades. Samantha won the 1965 Cannes Film Festival Best Actress award. In 1966, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and won the Sant Jordi Award for Best Performance in a Foreign Film.

Her daughter Jenna described Samantha's career in a lengthy tribute posted on her Instagram story:

“At just 26, she became one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses, starring in Return from the Ashes, Walk, Don't Run (Cary Grant's final film), Doctor Dolittle, The Molly Maguires, The Walking Stick, and The Light at the Edge of the World.”

She continued:

“ In 1972, she moved to Los Angeles, where her work expanded to television and independent cinema. She costarred with Yul Brynner in Anna and the King and made memorable appearances in Columbo, Starsky & Hutch, The Love Boat, and Fantasy Island, as well as in David Cronenberg's The Brood (1979) and the suspense film Curtains (1983).”

She added:

“Over a career spanning five decades, Samantha Eggar worked across every medium-film, stage, television, voice, and radio-leaving a legacy of intelligence, grace, and emotional depth. As a longtime member of CART (California Artists Radio Theatre), she voiced over 40 productions.”

She concluded the tribute.

“She is survived by her children, Nicolas (Mindy Stern) and Jenna (Brennan Brown); grandchildren, Isabel, Charlie, and Calla; sisters, Margaret Barron, Toni Maricic, and Vivien Thursby; and extended family across the U.K. and U.S. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the above mentioned organizations— and, in her honor, start (or continue) meditating!”
