British professional boxer Anthony Joshua is currently mourning the loss of two of his close associates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, who died in a car crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Nigeria around noon on December 29.

While Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele was Joshua’s personal trainer, Sina Ghami was his strength and conditioning coach.

According to BBC reports, Anthony was also injured in the accident but is currently in a stable condition at the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as also confirmed by his promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing.

The publication also cited that Anthony Joshua, Latif Ayodele, and Sina Ghami were all passengers in their black Lexus, which was driven by a fourth man, who also survived the crash.

Initial investigation revealed that the vehicle “lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre” and collided with a parked red commercial truck on the roadside.

Anthony Joshua, 36, was travelling from Lagos to his ancestral home in Sagamu, Ogun State, in southwest Nigeria, to spend the New Year with his family.

More about Anthony Joshua’s S&C coach

Besides being Anthony Joshua’s team member and full-time strength and conditioning coach for over ten years, Sina Ghami is also the co-founder and owner of the prominent London-based fitness center called Evolve Gym.

It has two outlets, one in South Ruislip, a suburb in West London, and another in Colindale. Evolve Gym also has three studios dedicated to functional training, boxing, and spinning, which feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, including 3D astroturf, Hammer Strength, and Life Fitness equipment.

According to the gym’s website, Sina Ghami is a “qualified sports and exercise rehabilitator” whose expertise lies in “musculoskeletal injuries and corrective exercise.”

Anthony Joshua’s close associate has also worked closely with athletes in the NFL, including Le’Veon Bell from the Pittsburgh Steelers, the NBA’s Draymond Green from the Golden State Warriors, and the Michigan State University football team.

On Instagram, Sina Ghami went by @sina_evolve and had over 22,100 followers. His bio mentions sports rehab and injury prevention as his specialities.

Last month, a joint Instagram post with MVP (Most Valuable Promotions) featured Sina Ghami as Persian/Iranian.

On December 20, Anthony Joshua fought and won against social media personality turned boxer Jake Paul during a Netflix bout in Miami, Florida. During the entire time, Sina Ghami was by his side and even joined him in the ring after the victory.

Notably, Ghami posted pictures on his Instagram Stories from the Lagos expressway. Joshua, too, shared images of him and Ayodele playing tennis, a few hours before their crash.

In the wake of the tragedy, Joshua’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing, released a statement, reported by the BBC. It states:

“Anthony Joshua was involved in a road traffic accident in Lagos, Nigeria, earlier today. With profound sadness, it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, have tragically passed away.”
“Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected – and we ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time. No further comment will be made at this time,” it adds.

Both Matchroom Boxing and 258 BXG confirmed that Anthony was in the hospital for “checks and treatment” and would remain there “for observation.”

Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn remembered Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele as “two great men.” The BBC also quoted him as paying tribute:

“Rest in eternal peace, Sina and Latz. My thoughts and deepest prayers are with everyone.”

British sports commentator Steve Bunce called Ghami and Ayodele “two of Joshua’s closest friends” and “massive parts of the Anthony Joshua machine.” Bunce also told BBC Radio 5 Live that they had been with the unified heavyweight champion from “very early on” in his career and were with him “all the time.”

Jake Paul also paid his tribute via X. Writing that “life is much more important than boxing,” he prayed for the “lost lives, AJ, and anyone impacted” by the unfortunate incident.

Anthony Joshua is yet to issue a statement.
