All we need to know about the family of Skye Gyngell

Skye Gyngell was born in Sydney, Australia, in September 1963, into a prominent family. Her father was Bruce Gyngell, an influential Australian television executive and broadcaster. He was recognized as the first face on Australian TV. Her mother was Anne Barr, a well-known interior designer.

She grew up with two siblings – brother David and sister Bryony - as the middle child in a household that underwent significant changes when they were in their teens.

According to Gyngell’s description in her personal essay on SheerLuxe, their father adopted a macrobiotic diet at that time, which “was hugely challenging with three grumpy teenagers at home.” His inspiration for the diet came after attending a seminar with Michio Kushi, the founder of the macrobiotic movement. She wrote:

“We had always had a healthy diet eating fish and salads but suddenly it became all about umeboshi plums, agar agar and 60% grain intake, and olive oil was completely banned. We spent a lot of time secretly eating away from home and saving our pocket money to buy sweets.”

After passing out of school, Skye Gyngell attended Sydney University to study law. She took up a job washing up at a restaurant/deli called The Store Charcuterie. She met a woman named Layla Sorfie, who taught her to make mayonnaise and other things.

Inspired by her, Gyngell applied to La Varenne and then worked at the two-Michelin-starred restaurant Dodin-Bouffant for about two years. After spending three years in Paris, she moved to London, where she took up a job at the Dorchester Hotel under the celebrated chef Anton Mosimann.

She raised her two daughters as a single mother, planning private dinner parties for Mario Testino, Charles Saatchi, and Madonna, among others.

Holy Gore is an Executive Producer, as described by her Instagram bio. Her profile features posts related to high-fashion campaigns. Her other daughter Evie Henderson, is a consultant and founder of the knitwear brand, Yellow World.

Skye Gyngell gained attention after becoming the head chef at Petersham Nurseries Café in London. At this place, she honed her culinary skills and built a strong reputation for her seasonal, ingredient-led cooking. This helped her earn a Michelin star in 2011. Three years later, Skye Gyngell opened her own restaurant called Spring in Somerset House.
