Pauline Collins, who was known for her role as Sarah Moffat in the TV series Upstairs, Downstairs and its spin-off Thomas & Sarah, has passed away at the age of 85.

According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, she died peacefully at her London home after battling Parkinson’s disease for several years. At the time of her death, she was surrounded by her family.

Collins shared a daughter named Louise with her former partner, Tony Rohr. He was an Irish actor who passed away in 2023 at the age of 84 due to prostate cancer. The Shirley Valentine star gave up her daughter, Louise, for adoption in 1964 when she was young and penniless. They reunited after 22 years when she came to know of her biological mother.

In her memoir titled, Letter to Louise: A Loving Memoir to the Daughter I Gave Up for Adoption, Pauline Collins detailed her experience with her first child, whom she had during her relationship with the Irish actor Tony Rohr.

At the age of 22, when Collins was a struggling actress, she fell pregnant with her daughter, Louise. But due to her unfortunate circumstances, she took the “awful” decision to give up her child for adoption.

Mirror reported that during that time, Pauline Collins kept her child a secret from her friends and family. She belonged to a Catholic family from Wallasey, Cheshire and is of Irish heritage. In her autobiography, she explained how societal pressures of the time compelled her to make the heart-wrenching decision.

She wrote:

“But it was tougher being an illegitimate girl because there would always people saying she will go the same way as her mother. For that reason I decided on adoption. It was awful, it broke my heart. It was like having a piece of your heart ripped out. I think it floors you for the rest of your life.”

Pauline Collins began a romantic relationship with Tony Rohr when they met in the 1960s at a repertory theatre in Killarney, Ireland. Born in May 1939 in Ireland, he decided to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.

His first role was in the short film, The Pale Faced Girl and his first television role was in an episode of Van der Valk, where he guest-starred as Hugo Moulders. He also worked in theatre at major production venues such as London's West End, the National Theatre, The Gate, Ireland's Abbey Theatre and the Royal Court Theatre.

He was married to Janet Revell from 1981 until her death in 2003. Pauline Collins tied the knot with John Alderton in 1969. They starred together in several films and TV shows, including The Time of Their Lives, Mrs Caldicot's Cabbage War, The Railway Children Return, and Finding Your Feet.

In his tribute to his late wife, he described her as “a remarkable star.” He added that she was “brilliant” in playing diverse characters but also brought the best in people whom she worked with.

She is survived by her husband, her older daughter, Louise and her children – Kate Alderton, Nicholas Alderton and Richard Alderton.
