Zach Ertz's wife is also a former athlete. Zach is married to Julie Beth Ertz, a former professional soccer player who played for the National Women's Soccer League club Chicago Red Stars and Angel City F.C. She was also a member of the United States women's national team for 10 years, from 2013 to 2023. Julie retired from playing international soccer two years ago, after the 2023 World Cup.

Julie was born to her parents, Kristi and David Johnston, in Mesa, Arizona, and has one sister. She was introduced to soccer by the local AYSO region, and throughout her younger days, she played soccer alongside her sibling.

Julie Ertz was one of the first female soccer players to be featured on the EA Sports' FIFA video game series in FIFA 16. Ertz and her teammates were also the first women's sports team to be honored with a ticker-tape parade in New York City.

Zach Ertz met his wife at Klein Field, Stanford University's baseball stadium. He proposed to his then-girlfriend at the very stadium where they first met in 2016, and got married a year later. Now, the couple shares three children: their first son, Madden, and the twins Kace and Kyren.

What happened to Zach Ertz during the Commanders vs. Vikings game?

Zach Ertz plays the tight end for the Washington Commanders. During the game, Ertz suffered an injury, which, according to coach Dan Quinn, is a torn ACL.

Coach Quinn reported:

"Early signs say a serious injury."

Ertz will undergo imaging on Monday to confirm the extent of his injury. He got injured late in the third quarter when he reached for a pass and was hit in his right leg. He had to be helped off the field before being taken to the locker room on a cart because he could not put pressure on his leg.

His teammate, Terry McLaurin, said:

"He's one of the linchpins of our team... I ain't going to lie; it was tough for everybody."

John Bates, one of his other teammates, also chimed in, saying:

"It breaks my heart when you see a great one like him, an all-time great [get hurt]... He does everything the right way, the way things should be done. He's just a pro's pro."

According to reports, Zach Ertz left the stadium on crutches with a sad look on his face.

Zach Ertz's injury was a major blow to the Commanders, especially after early signs suggested a serious ACL tear. His teammates expressed deep concern, showing how important he is to the team.
