Former En Vogue lead singer Dawn Robinson has revealed that she has been living in her car for the past three years.
She shared the news in a video uploaded on her YouTube account, OfficialDawnRobinson. The singer said in the clip posted on March 12, 2025:
“You guys for the past three years I have been living in my car."
Robinson faced personal and financial challenges when she left her parents’ house in Las Vegas in 2020. She briefly stayed with a co-manager in Los Angeles and in a hotel for eight months, before deciding to adopt a "car life" lifestyle, according to a report in People magazine.
She was a member of the popular '90s band En Vogue, which consisted of Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, Terry Ellis and Maxine Jones. The band was formed in 1989. Robinson left the group in 1997 due to contractual disputes. She discovered that the group members were paid only two cents per album sold, despite their significant commercial success. On an episode of YouKnow IGotSoul podcast in 2020, the 59-year-old singer revealed:
“So we got the same advance as the first album, which was about $40K, or $10K a piece. The first time around it was great, I had never had that. Then, here we are at the second album and we had the same terms, that was a problem.”
Her departure from En Vogue has recently gained attention due to her current living situation. The combination of her past success and her current situation has sparked an interest in her life.
Exploring the reason behind Dawn Robinson’s exit from En Vogue
En Vogue reached heights of success after releasing their first single, titled Hold On, in 1990. It reached number two on Billboard's Hot 100 singles charts, and number one on both the R&B singles and Hot Dance Music/Club Play charts, according to Last.fm.
The band reportedly sold over 28 million albums and singles worldwide. It became the second most successful girl group of the 1990s. Initially, the all-girl group consisted of four members — Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones, Dawn Robinson and Terry Ellis before Robinson left in 1997.

In a 2021 interview published by MadameNoire magazine, Robinson revealed the main reason behind her exit.
She revealed how they were not being fairly compensated in comparison to the money their albums made at the time. She recalled how MC Hammer helped the group find an attorney when he learned that they made “two cents a record,” despite being a huge hit on the charts. Robison said in the interview:
“Take your contracts and you guys ask questions. Because the fact that we were so big on the charts but making so little money, it blew him away.”

She added that when their producer found out, he was upset. Their group was reportedly assembled by hit music producers, Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy, Last.Fm reported. As per her interview, their producer (Denny) told them:
"You guys aren’t going to write on the second album. I’m revoking your royalties."
At that time, word also spread around that Robinson left the group because she was acting like a diva:
"Cindy, Terry, and Maxine were out there saying — Maxine admitted this. She was like, 'Dawn, we told the press that you were being a diva, that you left En Vogue because you were being a diva.'"
Robinson revealed that it led to differences between her and the band members, as they failed to take a stand for her. She returned to the group for her stints in 2005 and then in 2008- 2011 and 2019, as reported by Daily Mail .
Despite the amendments in the R&B group, En Vogue still continues to perform actively. Last year they celebrated 35 years since their inception. The present-day lineup consists of Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron, and Rhona Bennett, reported The List.
Daily Mail further stated that En Vogue sold over 20 million records, gained 1.9 million monthly listeners on Spotify and have 26 million on YouTube views.
