The 2024 rendition of the historical action franchise, Gladiator 2 has garnered quite some attention from the audience shortly after its release in the United States. Director Ridley Scott has worked on this epic drama alongside writers David Scarpa and Peter Craig.
The movie is reportedly filled with strong elements of violence and combat which could be the reason behind it being R-rated. So, if you are eager to learn what happens in the storyline almost 20 years after the events of Gladiator (2000), you might be in for an action-packed ride!
Gladiator 2's premise is set in Numidia, a Roman province, where misfortune befalls as enemy troops led by General Acacius launch an attack on the kingdom of Lucius (the son of Lucilla and Maximus). The original Ridley Scott has gained wide popularity over the years owing to Russell Crowe's performance, typical Hans Zimmer background scores, and a jaw-dropping ending. However, this movie was R-rated because of its bloody and hard-hitting action sequences.
The opening battle of Maximus' army against the barbarians contains a graphic display of a violent clash. Action was a key element throughout the film and in the first war, we see many people do not make it out in one piece.
Thus, the R rating of Gladiator is quite justified. The movie grossed about $ 451 million and achieved 80 plus critics as well as an audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
What is the story of Gladiator 2?
Gladiator 2 explores events almost twenty years after what happened in the first movie in 2000. Following Maximus' death in the original movie, his son now returns to a deadly quest.
General Marcus Acacius attacks the kingdom of Numidia with his troops and amidst the tumult, Lucius' wife is killed and he is enslaved by the enemies. Having suffered the loss of his family, Lucius takes matters into his hands and emerges as a 'Gladiator'. Inspired by the story of Maximus (his father), Lucius sets out on a journey to avenge his wife's death.
Initially, it was expected that Russell Crowe would return to the big screen. But as his character died in the first movie, it is obvious that now we will see a new protagonist as the plot continues.
