It's Gandalf, and he shall pass from anywhere, and it looks like his next stop is The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. He is not alone; he might be bringing Frodo Baggins alongside him. This surprise comes from Ian McKellen, who was at the For the Love of Fantasy fan convention with Elijah Wood.

The veteran actor first teased the fans by saying:

"I hear there's going to be another movie based in Middle-earth, and it's going to start filming in May. It's going to be directed by Gollum, and it's all about Gollum."

And then he dropped the banger in a volcano of fans. He said:

"I'll tell you two secrets about the casting: There's a character in the movie called Frodo, and there's a character in the movie called Gandalf."

Ian McKellen has played the wizard Gandalf in the franchise, and Elijah Wood portrayed Frodo Baggins.

Gandalf's return in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum doesn't come as a surprise if you are aware of both the LOTR and The Hobbit trilogies. The wizard can come back to life, but the hobbit cannot.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is reportedly set between these two trilogies, which are set sixty years apart. Even if we assume that we will have a young Frodo in it, we should also take that into account. The last time we saw Frodo was in 2012, when he appeared briefly in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Making him look younger will be quite a challenge.

Sir Ian McKellen is 86 years old as of this writing, and he still has that zeal for the craft. We can expect to see the same energy in the character (if Gandalf appears) in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Looks like he also loves the character and has always wanted to do it.

Last year, while speaking to Big Issue, he said that:

"I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I’ll be playing him. When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So they better be quick."

Looks like Serkis, who himself is the director and the lead of the film, heard him.

This one will not be a trilogy

While the franchise has already seen a couple of trilogies with Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, Andy Serkis's The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum won't be a trilogy but a two-part film.

The film is currently set for a Dec. 17, 2027 release and is likely to bring new life to Gollum, whom Andy Serkis has always considered an interesting character in the franchise. When he played the character, the restricted technology didn't allow them to capture his essence fully, as they couldn't capture facial expressions like they can now.

Looks like Gollum will be our precious this time!
