The idea of playing a superhero doesn't really appeal to Glen Powell. Instead, the Top Gun: Maverick (2022) star, known for playing Rooster and Maverick's "savior," will next take on the role of a father risking his life to save his daughter in The Running Man.
He was in an interview with Collider discussing the movie, where he was also asked a question about his interest in the superhero genre. Regarding that, he told Perri Nemiroff that:
"I love, you now, what Marvel is doing. I love what DC is doing. I think what they are doing is great. But the stories that at least get me inspired, the stories that I've always wanted to be a part of are these movies that you saw in the 80s, and, the 90s, early 2000s, where it's like, these are truly like man against the system movies. These David and Goliath stories where no one's super, you know. And, for me, it's a different feeling of leaving the theater and being like 'oh! that could be me.' If you just summon enough strength, if you summon enough energy, like that could be me. I think that's the difference. I just don't feel that superhero stories really apply to me the same way that an underdog story."
That said, The Running Man is something that fits well with the ideology of Glen Powell rather than superheroes from the MCU or DCU. It's another adaptation of a Stephen King novel of the same name. The story takes an approach that contrasts sharply with the author's other work, The Long Walk, which was also adapted into a film this year.
In The Long Walk, it's a dystopia run by a system controlling the people and holding an annual event where participants have to walk until the last one remains. In The Running Man, participants have to run for their lives and survive for 30 days to win the grand prize.
Some of the best roles Glen Powell has played throughout the years
Glen Powell's best role is perhaps in Top Gun: Maverick. There, he played the cocky Hangman, rival of Miles Teller's Rooster. Rooster and Hangman's story is presented in the same manner as Maverick (Tom Cruise) and Iceman (Val Kilmer), who were initially rivals but later became friends.
But Top Gun: Maverick isn't the only film where Glen Powell was seen flying a plane. In the same year, he acted in Devotion alongside Jonathan Majors, who plays Jesse Brown. Both of them are elite pilots and develop a friendship in the story.
Most recently, Glen Powell starred in the standalone sequel to the 1996 film Twister, called Twisters. In it, he plays a storm chaser and meteorologist named Tyler Owens, who goes after a tornado outbreak in Oklahoma.
Other than that, he has also appeared in films like Everybody Wants Some!! (2016), Set It Up (2018), Anyone but You (2023), and more.
He will next be seen, other than in The Running Man, in a black comedy called Huntington and a fantasy film called Ghostwriter.
