Will there be a Mission: Impossible 9?
Since the release of Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, fans are reportedly wondering if they will get to see a ninth installment anytime soon. The 8th film conclusively ends the storyline. Gabriel (Esai Morales) ends up dying, and they manage to trap the entity inside a device with five dimensions. Ethan Hunt is the only one with access. Even after saving the world from a nuclear war from this AI device, Ethan continues to go on as he does not die or announce his retirement from work.
This means that the franchise is open to new additions. However, there is no official news regarding a ninth installment. As the title suggests, Final Reckoning could actually be the last film in the franchise. Or possibly the last one with Tom Cruise in the lead.
In the past, both Cruise and the film's director, Christopher McQuarrie, have been tight-lipped about the franchise's future. Cruise said that he wants everyone to see the film for what it is. Simon Pegg was asked about the same, and he said that Cruise would never stop being an action star. He said,
"I don't think Tom will ever stop being an action star, whether it's Mission: Impossible or not. He's not going to quit anytime soon. He runs like a 14-year-old boy."
He also said that each character is connected and that removing anyone who affects the entire franchise. Pegg also said that characters are not interchangeable and hence, it won't be easy to just replace Cruise as Hunt.
The Final Reckoning is directed by McQuarrie, who has also produced it with Cruise. The writers of the film include McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen. As per Letterboxd, here's the synopsis:
Ethan Hunt and the IMF team continue their search for the terrifying AI known as the Entity — which has infiltrated intelligence networks all over the globe — with the world’s governments and a mysterious ghost from Ethan’s past on their trail. Joined by new allies and armed with the means to shut the Entity down for good, Hunt is in a race against time to prevent the world as we know it from changing forever.
Besides Cruise and Simon Pegg, the film also stars Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett, among others. The franchise has gone through multiple directors directing its installments which including names like Brian De Palma and J.J. Abrams.
