As Marvel heroes are reassembling for the upcoming sixth phase of the MCU, speculations have been buzzing around the return of the original Avengers for Avengers: Doomsday. With stars like Paul Rudd, Chris Hemsworth and Sam Wilson already joining the ensemble, fans have been curious to know if there are any chances of Scarlett Johansson returning as the iconic Black Widow.

Although the title now belongs to Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, many have theorized if there's space for Natasha Romanoff to also be a part of the film. Eric Pearson, who is the writer behind Black Widow talked about if Johansson's Romanoff would make an appearance in the MCU again now that Robert Downey Jr has joined the franchise.

Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, Pearson said:

"I will preface by saying that I have no idea, but I don’t think so. I feel like her end in Endgame and then her epilogue with our Black Widow prequel were so lovely. So I would be surprised, but I know nothing about that. I have very little knowledge of what’s going on with Doomsday right now."

Johansson has also denied any rumors of Natasha making a comeback in future Marvel projects. Previously the actress told InStyle in March:

"Natasha is dead. She is dead. She's dead. Okay? They just don't want to believe it. They’re like, 'But she could come back!' Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."

Eric Pearson revealed more details about Yelena Belova leading the New Avengers

After Steve Rogers led the Avengers for so many years, the Thunderbolts, who were newly fashioned as The New Avengers found their leader in Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova. As Black Widow, her team consists of Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier, David Harbour’s Red Guardian aka Alexei Shostakov, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost aka Ava Starr, Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent aka John Walker and Lewis Pullman’s Sentry aka Bob.

Pearson talked about how the idea for a Thunderbolts film came to be centred around Yelena as he said:

"Having had the pleasure to meet Florence on Black Widow and write the first Yelena Belova stuff and work with her to build that character, with her doing quite a bit of heavy lifting there. She’s incredible, and I knew that she was someone who could carry a movie like this. I didn’t want to go in saying, 'Let’s hide a Yelena movie in a team-up movie.' I wanted it to be a team."

He then added how Yelena was chosen as the leader of the team as he continued:

"The Avengers had the centerpiece of Tony Stark and Captain America, and the duality of those guys at the lead. For the Thunderbolts and the way that I wanted to view these team members and the themes of the movie, it felt like Yelena was a natural leader."

Thunderbolts* is now in theaters.
