As Spider-Man: Brand New Day gears up for production in August, the internet is rife with speculations about the plot. While it is official that Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle/The Punisher is a part of the movie, it is rumored that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk is also in the fourth Spider-Man movie. However, there is one character that many are wondering if is a part of the movie, Mephisto.

That’s because, in the comics, Brand New Day is the name of the series of comics published in 2008, right after Peter made a life-altering decision in 2007’s One More Day: Make a deal with Mephisto. Something similar (minus Mephisto) happened in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has led many to believe that the upcoming movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day might feature Mephisto.

However, it should be noted that as of now, Mephisto’s involvement in the upcoming movie is not officially confirmed, and it is currently unknown which MCU project Sacha Baron Cohen’s Mephisto will appear in next.

“One More Day” set up “Brand New Day” comics just like No Way Home set up Spider-Man: Brand New Day:

As mentioned earlier, One More Day ended on a controversial note as Peter makes a deal with the devil in exchange for healing a comatose Aunt May and retaining his secret identity. Peter, at that point, had revealed his secret of being Spider-Man in the 2006 event Civil War. But the cost of making a deal with the devil was too high, something Peter pays: his marriage to Mary Jane Watson.

To be fair, both of them decided to sell their marriage to the devil, setting up 2008’s Brand New Day, that were published between January and July 2008. While Spider-Man: No Way Home did not feature Mephisto or his deal with Spider-Man, Peter does lose his relationship with MJ and retain his secret identity, setting up the fourth movie, titled “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”.

Many fans are speculating that the upcoming movie will adapt the moment from One More Day in which Peter encounters Mephisto. However, unlike the 2007 controversial story, Peter might be able to resist Mephisto’s temptations and refuse to make a deal, because of the Spider-Sense.

Spider-Man: No Way Home hints that Peter’s Spider-Sense might be more powerful even than magic, as the scene in which Stephen Strange is unable to retrieve the magical cube from Peter’s hands despite the latter being in his astral form. Many believe that Peter’s Spider Senses could counter even Mephisto’s powers of persuasion.

Thus, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has a chance to redeem one of the most hated moments from the Spider-Man comics.

What will the upcoming Spider-Man movie be about?

The title for the fourth movie, “Brand New Day”, was announced at the 2025 CinemaCon in March. The fourth film will revolve around Peter trying to navigate a world that has forgotten his existence, thanks to the memory-erasing spell at the end of No Way Home. This is a storyline even producer Amy Pascal hinted at in the Behind the Lens podcast episode in December 2024:

“We have to deal with the fact that he decided he was going to give up being Peter Parker [in No Way Home], and that he was going to focus on being Spider-Man because being Peter Parker was too hard.”

Based on this quote, Spider-Man: Brand New Day might feature Peter Parker in his darkest hour, which makes him an ideal candidate for Mephisto. But it needs to be reiterated that this is just a fan speculation at this point.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for a July 31, 2026, release.
