We are going to see Johnny Depp again in a new look in Marc Webb's Day Drinker, where he finally has a fully grown beard instead of that iconic goatee we are used to seeing on the actor's face. The production is well underway in Spain, as Lionsgate announced, which also shared the first look of the actor in the film.
The film's plot is as follows, as put forward by Variety:
"“Day Drinker” tells the story of a private-yacht bartender (Cline) who encounters a mysterious, onboard guest (Depp). They soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Cruz) and connected in ways no one saw coming."
Other than Depp, Penélope Cruz, Madelyn Cline, and more are in the film too. This will be the fourth collaboration between Depp and Cruz—the last time they paired was in 2017 for Murder on the Orient Express.
How did fans react to Depp's Day Drinker look?
Following the news, fans began conversations around his role in the film across the internet. In a Reddit conversation, some fans mentioned the need for method acting. A Redditor Rski765 writes:
"This will take a bit of method acting from Depp."
Another one called Hefty-Station1704 writes,
"Perhaps the deepest Depp will go with method acting. He’s already been researching the roll for years."
This user, dubbed Yung-Sheldon, commented something that resonates with what Hefty-Station1704 said. The user writes:
"He’s been preparing for this role for nearly 30 years."
Perhaps the best response came from DethFeRok, who appears to be a big fan of his Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The comment reads:
"Ok Johnny… you’re drunk, not a pirate, but you are on a boat. And roll!"
You just won the internet, sir!
And given that Day Drinker will be a Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz collaboration, this one fan called Onyi-Biscuit30 was already in for the movie. The user said:
"Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz together again?! Count me in!"
Then there is one Jerasunderwear who gave a box office prediction of his own, as the user writes:
"500 million first week box office."
Let’s not get there too fast, too soon, buddy. But then there's no harm in speculating.
Why is Day Drinker being deemed a comeback when Depp was doing movies?
The past couple of years were a bit harsh for the actor after the trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard; they divorced in 2017. The case ran for six weeks in Fairfax, Virginia, where the verdict came on June 1, 2022.
After that, Johnny Depp was involved with a couple of live-action films—Jeanne du Barry (2023), where he acted, and Modì: Three Days on the Wing of Madness (2024), which he directed and produced. He also lent his voice to the animated film Johnny Puff: Secret Mission.
For Jeanne du Barry, he got the role in 2019. However, he got involved in another trial against The Sun, which he lost. Though he thought the creators wouldn’t want him for the film, he was wrong. His performance got a seven-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival.
The trial indeed affected Johnny Depp’s work, but his first look for Day Drinker tells us that the man’s back and ready to gulp down some alcoholic beverages and give us that charm like he always does. You’ve heard of him.
