Detective Benoit Blanc will return to solve another case soon in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the latest chapter from Rian Johnson's acclaimed mystery thriller series. It began with 2019's Knives Out, which introduced the world to Daniel Craig's new detective avatar. For a long time, Craig's name was often associated with his 007-agent identity. Johnson's whodunits offered him another opportunity to play the same character across multiple films.
Some sources say that Johnson was ideating a sequel while the first film was out in theaters. Thanks to its glowing reception, a Knives Out sequel saw the light of day. Keeping that in mind, some fans might be wondering if Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery will be the last film in the franchise or if the filmmaker is working on a sequel at the moment.
In a recent interview with Collider, he shed light on the same.
"As long as Daniel [Craig] still wants to keep doing it and as long as we have an idea that, to us, feels not just like cranking another one out, but feels genuinely exciting and scary like, 'Oh, wow, could we pull that off?' I love the genre."
Based on Johnson's comments, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery might not be the last Knives Out film. He seems on board with the idea of another project in the series. However, a potential follow-up will depend on logistical reasons, including Daniel Craig's interest in further projects. Johnson speaks further on this topic, on his future projects, and why he loves the mystery genre.
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery might not be the last film of the franchise
Rian Johnson made his feature directorial debut with Brick, a mystery thriller that followed a murder investigation through the perspective of a bunch of high-schoolers. Two decades later, he still loves the genre and is about to return with another mystery in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. During an interview with Collider, he reveals why.
"It’s endlessly malleable, and so it holds endless possibilities. But at the same time, I have made three of them in a row. I don’t feel burnt out on it at all, but the next thing I have in my head to write is an original that’s not a mystery at all. It’s a totally different genre. One of the things I love about the mystery genre is that it holds the whodunit. Like sci-fi, it encompasses so many other types of genres. 'Wake Up Dead Man,' this next movie, is so different than 'Glass Onion.' It’slike night and day. And so, as long as we keep doing that, it’s exciting."
Based on these comments, Rian Johnson might bring another chapter to the Knives Out franchise if the idea creatively intrigues him. It also depends on whether Daniel Craig wants to lead another project as Benoit Blanc after Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. During an interview with film critic Mark Kermode for the BFI in London, Craig revealed that he would love to do so.
"[If Rian Johnson] keeps writing them like that, then yes, I will play it.—It’s much easier on the limbs [than portraying Bond]."
So, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery might not be the end of the film series after all. However, the next chapter will take a while to come to life since Rian Johnson is reportedly working on another original project.
