Everybody knows that Wicked is supposed to be a two-part act. Still, many remain hopeful for a continuation, maybe there's a possibility of a third act?
No, as of now, unfortunately, there isn't any possibility of a third act. And with the latest comment by the franchise director, John M. Chu, it is confirmed. Talking to Telemundo’s Irasema Torres on the red carpet, when asked if that's the end of the Yellow Brick Road, he said,
"Listen, you never know. But yes."
Giving a wicked laugh before continuing, he stated,
"As far as I know, this was always meant to be a two movie experience. A journey over a year of time where everyone can take this era, bring their friends, their family, get to know these women, dress up like them, and be like them, be inspired by them. And, so, yeah, this is the end of an era. But you never know, yeah."
He was also asked about a potential spin-off of the original films, but he isn't involved in any as of writing this, nor do we have any official word on it.
But Chu, aware that the fans want a spin-off, answered,
"Maybe the audience can tell us."
The first film, Wicked, was released last year and became a worldwide phenomenon, earning $756 million at the global box office. From its story to visuals to vocals, everything was praised.
What's the story of Wicked?
The two-part story follows Elphaba Thropp, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, who arrives at Shiz University to bid farewell to her paraplegic sister Nessarose (Marissa Bode). The two face an unfortunate incident, and Elphaba is mocked by students for her green skin. Madam Morrible learns of her powers, offers her admission, and one-on-one lessons. Galinda, also on her way to becoming a powerful sorceress, is jealous of this, but unfortunately ends up rooming with Elphaba.
Elphaba instantly becomes Madame Morrible's (Michelle Yeoh) favourite, who is aware of the power and potential in her. However, that is for her own advantage, which is to help the iconic Wizard of Oz, played by Jeff Goldblum, in his own endeavors.
However, we soon see the lies hidden beneath all the sweet talk following Elphaba's meeting with Oz, where she accidentally sprouts wings from the backs of the guard monkeys at the Wizard's place. She tries to reverse the spell, but it is too late, and she ends up fleeing from the place.
By the end of the film, Elphaba Thropp has been labeled as The Wicked Witch of the West.
There are also themes of friendship in the movie. Ariana Grande, who plays Galinda Upland, eventually becomes her best friend, although initially they bump heads as rivals. Madam Morrible has always despised Galinda throughout the film, but she uses her to manipulate Elphaba to surrender, but fails.
Elphaba is now set to continue her journey and the fight for animal rights in the second movie. Cruelty towards animals is a cause close to her heart, and she also urges the Wizard to do something about it. But it turns out that Wizard isn't of any help.
Wicked: For Good recently premiered in São Paulo, Brazil. The movie is scheduled to premiere in Paris, London, Singapore, and New York as well. Following that, it will be released theatrically on November 21, 2025.
