Lilo & Stitch is a sci-fi comedy film and a live action adaptation of Disney's namesake 2002 film, which was made in the animation format. Dean Fleischer Camp has directed the film, while Mike Van Waes and Chris Kekaniokalani Bright are the writers. Here's the official synopsis, per IMDb:
A lonely Hawaiian girl befriends a runaway alien, helping to mend her fragmented family.
The film opened earlier this month and continues to do well commercially. So far, it is the 4th film of this year to achieve a milestone at the box office. That too, within the first week of its release. Let us find out what that milestone is.
Lilo & Stitch achieves box-office milestone
Lilo & Stitch has met with mostly mixed critical response and holds a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though the film has managed to do well at the box office. Within a week of its release, the film has touched the $400 million mark at the box office internationally. This makes it the fourth film in 2025 so far after the Chinese film Ne Zha 2, A Minecraft Movie, and Captain America: Brave New World to scale that box office high, according to Screen Rant.
In the domestic market, Lilo & Stitch has minted $200 million at the ticket window. It had managed to earn $182.6 million during the weekend with an opening collection of $178.6 million.
This is good news for Disney because their earlier live-action adaptation, Snow White, was a critical and commercial failure.
Lilo & Stitch is produced by Jonathan Eirich and Dan Lin. Here's a list of its cast members:
- Maia Kealoha as Lilo Pelekai
- Chris Sanders as Stitch's voice
- Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani Pelekai
- Zach Galifianakis as the voice of Dr. Jumba Jookiba
- Billy Magnussen as Agent Wendell Pleakley's voice
- Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles
- Hannah Waddingham as Grand Councilwoman's voice
- Kaipo Dudoit as David Kawena
- Tia Carrere as Mrs. Kekoa
Dean Camp, the film's director, spoke to Deadline about directing the remake. He said,
"It’s always been my favorite Disney animated film, and it’s always been the one that I felt like I could do a live-action adaptation of because when I saw the original in theaters, I was in high school, and it didn’t look like any other animated Disney movie I’d ever seen. The characters felt so authentic and a little rough around the edges in a way that I now know is the influence of Chris Sanders’ actual, original art style. But at the time, I just thought, wow, this is such a different look for a Disney movie."
He added:
"It’s also the thing that made it seem like there’s a great opportunity here to tell a live-action version of these characters because, unlike most Disney animated films, it takes place in contemporary society. It stars real, mostly humans going through some real stuff that many other humans go through daily. So, it felt like a great opportunity. I jumped at the chance."
Lilo & Stitch is expected to continue doing well at the box office. Despite the mixed response, the nostalgia of the characters might have worked in the film's favor.
