Community: The Movie was set to be a comedy-drama film that was a feature-length adaptation of NBC's sitcom Community. The latter ran for six seasons between 2009 and 2015. Alison Brie played Annie Edison, the overachiever constantly trying to be the best. She is set to reprise her role in the film.
Fans of the sitcom were excited after the film was announced back in 2022, after years-long speculation. The film was supposed to have several actors from the show reprising their respective roles.
However, Brie has recently shared a new update about the movie with ScreenRant, disappointing the fans. She said,
“I truly have nothing to say about the Community movie. It's sort of paused, and we're all—I know the cast is really rooting for it. We all love each other so much and would love to get back on set someday.”
Let us find out more about what she said.
Alison Brie shares a disappointing update on Community: The Movie
People who were waiting for Community: The Movie might get disappointed with this news. Her comment means that fans of the film will have to wait a little longer than usual. The film was announced in September 2022 and was set to be released on Peacock.
Last year in April, the actress revealed that they finally have a script for the film, which is funny. She said,
“We’ve got a script, which is a major update. We’ve got a script — you heard it here first. I’ve read the script, and it’s so funny.”
She further hoped that her character of Annie Edison had not changed much for the film.
“I hope that Annie hasn’t changed too much because I loved her just the way she was."
In August 2022, the series creator Dan Harmon revealed that they had an outline for Community: The Movie. He said,
“There is an outline for it. There’s a product put together and pitched out in the world. I guess that’s how real it is. That’s probably enough that’ll make people mad when [there’s nothing] a year from now. It still doesn’t mean there’s going to be a movie tomorrow. It means there is definitely going to be one.”
Harmon was the showrunner of the series for the first three seasons and the fifth and sixth seasons. It takes place in the fictional town of Greendale and focuses on the lives of some characters. Its ensemble cast includes Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, and Yvette Nicole Brown, among others.
While Brie's comment might disappoint fans, there is still a silver lining in this. We know for sure that the project has been delayed for now. But it's reassuring to know that it has not been cancelled for now. Given the changing landscape of entertainment and the rarity of films based on shows, the delay seems inevitable.
