A documentary is coming out this month on Netflix called Shark Whisperer. And if you are someone staying abreast of oceanic scenes across the globe, you might know this name: Ocean Ramsey. She is a professional shark diver and is often in talks among the netizens for her videos showcasing these beautiful aquatic dwellers.

She was talking to People Magazine recently, where she discussed the upcoming documentary on the streaming platform. She addressed the fact that people have accused her of doing what she does for attention. Regarding this, she said,

"If I was just doing things for likes... I wouldn't waste time running reef and beach cleanups and cutting fishing line off of sharks. And I wouldn't waste my time getting laws passed to protect them, or educating, or writing books, or going into schools and doing presentations."

As of this writing, the diver's Instagram account has a couple of million followers, with her reels reaching as many as 40 million viewers worldwide.

Michael Domeier, a marine biologist, once criticized Ocean Ramsey after one of her reels went viral. He outright labeled her actions as "selfish" and "self-promotion."

The reel in question here saw Ocean touching and riding alongside a large shark. Domeier clearly mentioned in his critical post that the first rule of such endeavors is to not touch the sharks.

What to expect from Shark Whisperer?

As the title is suggesting, we will see Ocean Ramsey in close encounters with sharks roaming the ocean in Shark Whisperer. The trailer begins with her implying that she isn't crazy for what she is doing but is hyperaware of it.

The message she wants to give the world comes around in Shark Whisperer at around the 0:20 minute mark, where she says her mission is to prove that sharks are not monsters. She even goes on to explain that if anything happens to her, it isn't for a shark to bear.

This reminds us of another great wildlife educator and conservationist who succumbed to death after filming in the Great Barrier Reef. A short-tail stingray had penetrated his thoracic wall. We add this to imply that encounters like these can be fatal.

Just before the 1:00 minute mark in the Shark Whisperer trailer, we see her aquatic shots with sharks, which became a subject of criticism. Ocean Ramsey addresses it in the documentary's trailer too, but she doesn't seem concerned about it and still wants to be there in the ocean alongside sharks for a cause.

Then the Shark Whisperer trailer discusses the danger of extinction of these aquatic creatures. However, she also addresses the fact that something needs to be done for the sharks and changemakers have to do something extreme to bring about a change.

It is true that these creatures are facing a danger of extinction. In one story which was covered by The Guardian, a study emphasized the fact that two-thirds of sharks and rays are in danger of being wiped out. A global expert on sharks and part of that research, Prof. Colin Simpfendorfer, affirmed this and mentioned that the fishing pressure is something these creatures aren't able to deal with.
