The film narrates the story of Larson’s Joy, who is held captive by a man for seven years and gives birth to a boy, whom she names Jack. It revolves around how Joy helps Jack in escaping the shed that they were captured in, and later their struggles in life outside the shed, as Jack had not seen anything other than the confined space where he was born and lived for five years.

Larson portrays the character of a mother and also the victim of Old Nick’s crimes thoughtfully. She is terrified but also has to be fearless when it comes to helping Jack get out of the shed for their survival, making it one of Larson’s best performances and also a must-watch film in her filmography.
