Zach Cregger’s mystery horror Weapons hits theaters on August 8, but it’s already earning early critical praise.

The film has earned a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 reviews, which means that every review it has received so far has been positive. It’s still too early to gauge their official consensus, and the score may change as more reviews start pouring in. Still, based on the early score, the film seems like a treat for horror fans.

Weapons becomes a welcome addition to a list of horror films released this year that have received widespread praise. Apart from Weapons, 2025 also gave us Sinners (dir. Ryan Coogler), Bring Her Back (dir. Danny and Michael Philippou), The Ugly Stepsister (dir. Emilie Blichfeldt), 28 Years Later (dir. Danny Boyle), and Companion (dir. Drew Hancock), among others.

Let's find out what the reviews are saying so far.

What are critics saying about Weapons?

Weapons is writer-director Zach Cregger’s follow-up project to his 2022 film, Barbarian. It was also a positively reviewed horror film, which earned a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score based on more than 200 reviews.

Cregger’s latest film has also received nothing but praise so far. That’s likely to boost anticipation as the film hits theaters. One of the early reviews from Chris Evangelista says:

"A wonderful mixture of bad vibes and macabre fun, "Weapons" is one of the best horror movies of the year."

Lyvie Scott from Inverse says that the film is:

"...as haunting and cerebral as it is almost cartoonishly funny, producing a cocktail of emotions nearly as disarming as the film itself."

Matt Neglia from Next Big Picture says:

"It's worth seeing for its bold aim from Cregger, a filmmaker still very much on the rise and filled with tremendous promise, but one that may leave many viewers as frustrated and divided as the characters in the film."

Eric Eisenberg from CinemaBlend adds:

"It’s intimate while also being epic, it’s scary while expertly utilizing humor as punctuation, and even the most dedicated cinephiles will be rocked by its surprises."

Let's unpack what the film has in store for us.

Warner Bros. Pictures, who serve as the film’s distributor, has released two official trailers so far. However, they reveal only a fraction of what we will witness in the upcoming movie.

Before diving into its details, let’s see what the plot synopsis tells us about the film. It reads:

"When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance."

The previously released clips offer a hint of the story. It shows a group of kids mysteriously disappearing on a single night. They all happen to be studying in the same class. So, the blame falls upon their teacher, suspecting she might have been behind this strange incident. However, it seems to be intentionally ambiguous so that we can watch its twisted mystery with fresh eyes when it drops in theaters.

The cast includes Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, Alden Ehrenreich, and more. You can catch it in theaters from August 8, 2025.
