General Hospital fans look back on Quartermaine Thanksgivings past as they prep for one without Monica (and Ned?)

On General Hospital, Ned Quartermaine (Wally Kurth) is in the hospital itself after suffering a heart attack onscreen and having bypass surgery.

Whether the Quartermaine patriarch can participate in the annual Thanksgiving festivities and misadventures at the Q mansion is up in the air. General Hospital fans are curious to see how Ned’s health factors into this year’s holiday, as well as the recent thaw in the animosity that Gio Palmeieri (Giovanni Mazza) has towards his mother, Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton).

Not to mention that this is the first time the Quartermaines will celebrate Thanksgiving without their leader, Monica (Leslie Charleson) after her death this fall.

Quartermaine Thanksgiving is always fun on General Hospital

Ned’s absence has been noted by many fans on social media, pointing out that there has been little mention of his condition since he went to General Hospital. It has also not been shown whether Drew (Cameron Mathison) knows that Ned had an actual heart attack after he left Ned on the ground at Bobbie’s thinking he was faking it.

The Qs celebrated Thanksgiving shortly after Edward’s death in 2012, so it will be interesting to see if there are any callbacks to him in the near future.

With Rocco (Finn Carr) currently facing legal trouble for breaking into Dalton’s lab, and Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) furious with his son Gio for not protecting his half-brother, there is potential for another family argument over turkey. And don’t forget that the brothers’ mamas, Brook Lynn and Lulu (Alexa Havins Bruening) are perpetually feuding even though they’re in a relative truce at the moment.

Turkey Day in Port Charles isn’t complete without the Qs having pizza, someone saying “First we sing, then we eat” followed by the anthem “We Gather Together.” We didn’t see that last year, so the odds may be higher that we’ll see some shenanigans this time.

The song and the pizza have been traditions for over 30 years now on General Hospital, as the turkey is always ruined by some mishap or argument. Some years, an outsider from the family causes mischief and mayhem with the turkey. Lately, there has been plenty of comedy with Italian-born Bensonhurst cook Olivia Quartermaine (Lisa LoCicero) in charge of the food. Who can forget 2022, when a live turkey rampaged through the kitchen?

As the holiday approaches on General Hospital, fan sites of Wally Kurth and the Quartermaines in general have been serving up memories of past holiday hijinks at the Quartermaine estate.

The Instagram account nivfansgh, which is a fan site for Ned and Olivia, has shared video clips of past episodes this week that not only feature their favorite couple, but center on Monica. The owner shared the same clips on their X account. The day before Thanksgiving, they shared a clip of the live turkey invasion.

Their first one came in 2014, which was Olivia’s first Thanksgiving with the family. It featured a classic argument between Monica and Tracy (Jane Elliot) and a cameo appearance by Ned’s father, Lord Larry Ashton (Hugo Napier).

Another General Hospital scene, from 2017, had Monica alone in the living room after she was supposed to go out of town. The rest of the Qs had other plans. When her flight was canceled, Monica sat on a couch preparing to have Thanksgiving dinner by herself, but then Ned and the rest walked in with the pizzas, with Ned starting the song.

The group that came with him was a large one, including Drew, Sam and Danny as a little boy, as well as the Ashford family.

Another one, from 2019, featured Brook Lynn’s first Thanksgiving with the Quartermaines after Amanda Setton took over the role. It showed a big argument Brook Lynn was having with Lulu (then Emme Rylan), Ned and Olivia over that year’s turkey mishap, and Monica leading Franco (Roger Howarth) into the living room.

At the time, Franco thought he was Monica’s son Drew Cain because of the device in his head implanted by Shiloh Archer (Cody Ryan McLaughlin), and Monica wanted to show “Drew” who his family was. Franco was taken aback by the argument, and as they watched it go on as Monica smiled with pride, Franco told Monica “I’m not sure what you’re smiling at, it’s pretty much a disaster.” Monica responded, “Well, we’re Quartermaines. Disaster is a family tradition.” Brook Lynn then says the phrase “First we sing, then we eat” and the song is joined by Leo and Rocco as little boys.

A fan account, fansofwallykurth, devoted to Kurth and his work on both General Hospital and Days of Our Lives, recently shared a clip of Kurth’s first Thanksgiving as Ned in the Q mansion. It was in 1992, pre disasters, and simply showed Edward and Lila leading the family in prayer as Monica held A.J.’s hand. Steve Burton’s Jason was there smiling, too. Time will tell if we see the Quartermaines again smiling, having arguments, or both.
