General Hospital's Jane Elliot is a national treasure. Full stop. There's not a moment when she is on our screens when we are not riveted. Whether it's grumpy Tracy complaining about something in a throwaway scene or Tracy showing her big, beautiful heart to her family, Elliot always has us paying attention. This week, she even brought us to tears, earning her a Soap Central nod as performer of the week.

Tracy's indignation turns to shock

When Tracy is exasperated, Elliot always lets us know. Watching her rant to Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) about the virtues of Lulu (Alexa Havins) as she racked her brain trying to figure out why her granddaughter hated her stepdaughter was both amusing and frustrating. We knew Brook Lynn's reasons, but to Tracy's utter shock — and our's — Brook Lynn finally blurted out the truth. She had a baby when she was in high school and Lulu was holding that knowledge over Brook Lynn's head.

And shock is an understatement by the look on Tracy's face. When Brook Lynn finally broke down, Elliot didn't have to say a word. She acted with her face and her eyes like few performers can. Tracy's eyes popped open with surprise, but also with love for her granddaughter and empathy for what she must have gone through.

General Hospital's fierce protector

If Tracy Q loves you, she will do anything for you and you'll always know it. Brook Lynn knows her Granny has her back, thanks to some of the most moving scenes we've seen on soaps in a while. Elliot choked back tears and so did we as she questioned Brook Lynn about that time in her life and how the decision to give up her baby affected her.

The love a grandmother feels for her child was palpable in Tracy's face and voice, thanks to Elliot's masterful performance. She had all the compassion for Brook Lynn in the world — and then she turned on a dime as soon as Brook Lynn was gone and Lois was in the room.

Elliot switched Tracy's mood in an instant when she demanded that her former daughter-in-law tell her where her great-grandson is. Elliot may just become the star of this story as she takes her place as General Hospital's matriarch.
