In California, Carly informed Jason that Sonny was doing okay. However, a shady nurse was in his room, injecting his IV with something shady. Sonny suddenly woke and gave the nurse a look before nodding off. Just then, Brick walked in and asked to see some ID.

The nurse pulled a gun, but Brick was right on top of it and pulled his first, shooting the nurse dead. As the nurse lay splayed across Sonny's legs, Brick called someone to remove the body. When Carly came in and saw the scene, she freaked, but Brick warned her to keep her voice down. "We got a little situation," Brick said.

Brick took Carly into the hall and said he saw blood by a supply closet, looked inside, found an injured nurse, and knew something was up. Just a few minutes later, Carly was stunned when Jack appeared out of nowhere. Apparently, that was who Brick called. Jack happened to be on his way to L.A. for a meeting anyway, so he figured he'd stop by and help out.

As Sonny lay unconscious, he dreamed about being back in Port Charles, with Mike serving him at Kelly's. The place even had the old Kelly's sign. "I can't believe it's been five years," Sonny said after embracing his father. "Time flies when you're having fun," Mike said. Mike assured Sonny he wasn't dead.

"The surgery was a complete success, but they sedated you pretty good, so I saw it as an opportunity for a visit," Ghost Mike explained. All Sonny could say was, "You were right about all of it."

Sonny explained his stance to Ghost Mike. "I should have gotten out of the business a long time ago. How many times did you tell me to walk away? I should have listened to you, Dad," Sonny said. Ghost Mike blamed himself for Sonny becoming a mobster. He wasn't there for him as a kid.

Sonny explained that he'd been thinking about getting out of the business for a while. "It's been creeping up on me. What really drove it home is what happened to Michael. It's my fault. Someone came after me, and Michael paid for it," Sonny said as tears welled in his eyes. "It's not the first time Michael has gotten caught in the crossfire, but it has to be the last. The last time," Sonny added.

"I'm in a trap of my own making, and I can't find a way out that's going to keep my family safe," Sonny lamented to Ghost Mike. Sonny admitted that Jason also wanted out, which left Ghost Mike perplexed. "I'm sorry, son. I wish I had an answer for you," he said. Ghost Mike was sure that Sonny could figure this out for himself.

In the Q solarium, Tracy insisted that Gio register to vote in Port Charles so he could have his say on the referendum. "Those piers belong to my Uncle Sonny," Gio argued. Tracy asked Gio to read a specific website. "You might think twice about supporting Sonny," she said.

When Gio read it, he declared the article to be fake news, or at least a "total hit piece." Gio was furious. "It paints Uncle Sonny to be some criminal mastermind," he said. Tracy thought it was pretty accurate and confessed she was working with a committee trying to "divest Sonny of his waterfront property."

Gio wanted to know why. "Because it stops Sonny from doing business, and I'm not talking about the coffee business," Tracy said. "Gio, I have lived in Port Charles a lot longer than you, and I have seen the violence and crime he has brought to this city and to this family," Tracy added.

An angry Gio pointed out how much Sonny had done for him over the years. However, Tracy didn't want Gio exposed to the danger Sonny brings. "Do you know what happens to people that Sonny pulls into his world? They end up in prison or in the ground. And it would devastate me if that happened to you," Tracy declared.

Alexis stared at the commitment papers and asked Molly and Kristina where they got them. Molly explained that Diane's files had gotten mixed up with hers. "The second I saw what it was, I went straight to Kristina," Molly said.

Alexis tried to explain herself, but Kristina didn't want to hear it. "It's all there in black and white. You think that I'm crazy and I need to be committed," Kristina said. Alexis explained that she never signed or filed the papers, but Kristina assumed that was because Molly had found them first.

Alexis asked to speak to Kristina alone, but both girls refused. So, Alexis had to talk in code. "I don't think anyone can deny how difficult this past year has been for Kristina," she said. She claimed she noticed the progress Kristina had made at their girls' night, so she decided not to sign the papers.

Kristina and Molly begged to know why she had decided to have these papers drawn up now. "Because you left me no choice," Alexis blurted out. Molly was furious that Alexis would blame Kristina. "Molly, your sister is not doing as well as you think," Alexis vaguely said. "I got the sense that you were covering, that you were saying all the right things, but not feeling them," Alexis reasoned.

Kristina was furious that Alexis didn't think about what she wanted, seemingly forgetting that she had tried to kill someone a few short weeks ago. Kristina walked out, leaving Molly there to give Alexis dirty looks. She laid into her mother for trying to run Kristina's life, then stormed out of the office.

Once she was alone, Alexis received a mysterious package. When she opened it, she found a box with the infamous dagger inside.

Kristina headed straight to Irene's grave and continued to call her Adela as she explained how horribly she had messed up. "I did something really bad. I tried to kill Ava and in doing so, I hurt Ric and Elizabeth," Kristina told a stillborn infant's grave.

Trina and Kai were surprised to see Curtis at The Savoy. He pointed out that he still owned the place. Kai asked to speak to Curtis for a moment. He was sorry for asking for his advice about the surgery, but he didn't take his advice. Curtis claimed it was no big deal. He admitted Kai for thinking for himself.

Trina met up with Emma and told her how she was nervous about Kai's surgery, scheduled for the next day. Emma encouraged Trina to stay positive for Kai's sake. Just then, Professor Dalton appeared. He just wanted to say hi to Emma, but also asked to speak to her alone.

Dalton asked how her extra credit assignment was going while reminding her that it could help her land the research assistant position. Emma continued to suck up to the professor, telling him she was fascinated by his latest lecture. However, when Gio texted asking her to meet him at the Qs, Emma made a beeline for her buddy.

As Josslyn walked around a strange, dark hallway, a man in a hoodie grabbed her. When he let her go, she found that the man was Vaughn. He wanted an update on Joss' quest to become Professor Dalton's new research assistant. Joss claimed that she was doing all she could, "but the competition is stiff."

Vaughn chastised Joss, claiming the whole mission hinged on Josslyn becoming Dalton's assistant. "I can't snap my fingers and become his assistant," Joss argued. Vaughn advised Josslyn to do something that made her stand out.

When Jordan walked into The Savoy, she received a text from Felicia telling her that she and Anna would be late. Jordan sat down with Curtis. Jordan told Curtis she was trying to get along with Drew now, for appearance's sake.

Later, Anna finally arrived and headed for the bar, where Dalton promptly ordered her a drink. She found it to be quite curious when Dalton told her that he was a college professor who had just moved from the Bay Area.

At the hospital, Brad handed Portia multiple files with Drew's entire medical history since arriving in Port Charles, including his Jake Doe files. Portia then told Brad she had another assignment for him.

"I need you to get me ketamine," Portia said. "Good for you," Brad responded. "I didn't know that's how you roll, chief," he added. A frustrated Portia insisted it wasn't for her, but Brad was hesitant. She warned him he would be fired if she didn't do what he asked. Brad did as he was told and delivered the ketamine to Portia.
