On General Hospital, New Year’s Eve in Port Charles is usually a recipe for disaster, illicit trysts, or at least one explosion. There is a hero just waiting to lend a paw.

General Hospital: New Year's Eve Has Gone to the Dogs

This NYE, amidst the popping champagne corks and midnight kisses, one character stood head and shoulders (or paws) above the rest. I’m talking, of course, about Outback the beagle. While the humans were busy overcomplicating their lives with angst and schemes, Outback proved he is not only the most loyal resident of the Quartermaine stables but potentially the only one with any common sense.

Consider the evidence. Cody Bell (Josh Kelly), bless his heart, was ready to throw in the towel on his New Year’s plans with Molly (Kristen Vaganos) because she was stuck writing a plea deal. He was moping around the stables, taking down decorations like a sad party clown. Who stepped in to stop this pity party? Outback. One well-timed, judgmental bark from that dog was all it took for Cody to realize he was being ridiculous. Outback didn’t need a monologue or a flashback sequence; he just gave a look that said, "Go get the girl, you fool." That is the kind of pivoting loyalty we need more of.

But Outback’s pivotal role didn’t stop at life coaching. The canine wonder also moonlights as a matchmaker. By conveniently needing a babysitter, Outback set the stage for Emma (Braeden Bruner) and Gio (Gio Palmieri) to finally have some alone time. While the dog sat back—probably shaking his head at the humans' slow pacing—Emma and Gio had a heart-to-heart about violins and identity that led to a fireworks-lit kiss. Basically, Outback is responsible for the next generation of supercouples.

Compare this effortless loyalty to the rest of the canvas. You have Carly (Laura Wright) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) sharing champagne while plotting to take down Jack played by Chris McKenna) (nothing says "Happy New Year" like a vendetta). You have Jason (Steve Burton)and Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) bonding over being "train wrecks" in a kitchen. Even Curtis (Donnell Turner) and Jordan (Tanisha Harper), who finally reunited, had to wade through years of baggage and Selina Wu (Lydia Look) drama to get there.

In a town filled with secret agendas, mob wars, and complicated pasts, Outback offers something rare: pure, unadulterated loyalty. He supports his friends, nudges them toward happiness, and doesn't ask for anything but a scratch behind the ears. If General Hospital knows what’s good for it, it’ll give this dog a contract and maybe his own storyline. He’s clearly the only one leading the pack.
