General Hospital newcomer Braedyn Bruner has hit the ground running as Emma, the bad girl with a humanitarian mission. Much like her grandmother, Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), Emma is seeking justice. She wants to prove that Professor Dalton (Daniel Goddard) has something nefarious going on that may involve experimentation on higher mammals. While Anna came to Port Charles as a double agent, her super spy need for justice has always ruled her actions. Watching the two form a bond on the show is great, and Bruner had some things to say about her real-world relationship with Hughes.
She doesn’t have to act when with Hughes
Bruner was a guest on her General Hospital co-star, Maurice Benard’s (Sonny), YouTube show, State of Mind. “Let's talk about Finola Hughes,” he stated, praising, “She's fantastic. She’s fantastic. She's your champion. Good to have, good to have.” He asked what their scenes were like, and was either pretending or truly didn’t know the answer to his next question, which was, “What’s going on [with their characters]. You're her daughter, right?” Bruner corrected him, saying, “I'm her granddaughter,” and added, “Which I know she looks so young to be a grandmother.” Bruner went on to say that Hughes is her idol, both as Anna and as herself in real life, which makes “acting in scenes with her so much greater because I don't really have to act.”
She explained that Hughes emphasized the importance of learning one’s lines and being fully prepared. “Learn your lines. That's the foundation of everything,” was the advice Hughes gave, which continued with, “Learn it till it's concrete and then you get up there and it's just…be present, be active, be listening, and, like, let's try it 50,000 ways and, like, see what lands right.” Bruner revealed that when she did her test reading with Hughes, they didn’t have a chance to talk much beyond sharing a scene or two. But Bruner appreciated Hughes’ energy and thought to herself, “I would love to work with this woman. She's hilarious.” (Learn how Bruner prepared to take on the role of Emma.)
She wants to be like Hughes

The General Hospital newcomer felt there was some deception going on between Emma and Anna. Emma doesn’t know that Anna has been trying to look into Dalton very cautiously. “I'm very much like Finola was like when she first came on in the 80s,” she stated, adding, “She was the really kick-ass, like, independent character, and I just want to be like her.” She explained that Anna seems to be aware that Emma wants to be like her, and she’s looking forward to where the story leads.
Benard asked if Emma had a boyfriend on General Hospital, and Bruner remarked that she did some chemistry tests with Giovanni Mazza, who plays Gio. But because of the tumultuousness of his current storyline, she explained that, “Right now, we’re kind of in that ‘I’ll be there for you’ stage of the friendship, and that slow burn kind of thing.” She did feel, though, that the overall plan is to have Gio and Emma become romantically entangled, and we’re looking forward to that!
