General Hospital did well on July 9 and 10, 2025, when the National Academy for Television Arts & Sciences announced its nominees for the 52nd annual Daytime Emmys. This year’s ceremony is set for October 17 in Pasadena, California.
Amongst the recognitions, General Hospital received 16 nominations for writing, directing, technical, acting, and Outstanding Drama Series.
Gregory Harrison showed his General Hospital character dying from ALS

Gregory Harrison received a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Gregory Chase on General Hospital. It is the first Emmy nod of any kind for Harrison, who has a successful career spanning several decades after first becoming a household name by playing Dr. Gonzo Gates on Trapper John, M.D.
Harrison first took over the role in 2020 after James Read played Gregory Chase in 2018, and exited in May, 2024.
On General Hospital, Harrison had a tough task that would challenge any actor in 2024, which was the eligibility period for this round of the Daytime Emmys.
For more than a year, Harrison guided his character through the final stages of his life while he battled the terminal disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Gregory received the fatal diagnosis in early 2023.
Using the broad strokes and large canvas allowed by a soap opera, Harrison showed his character’s gradual weakening as time went on. He ended his run on General Hospital by portraying the professor and journalist during a sometimes difficult but ultimately rewarding final day of his life, when Chase officiated his son Harrison’s (Josh Swickard) wedding to Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton).
When the calendar turned to 2024, Gregory’s top priority was to be there, still alive and in top form, for his son’s wedding. Chase and Brook Lynn asked him to officiate the wedding, and one of Gregory’s final goals was to preserve his energy to come through for his son and the love of his life on their big day.
Another difficult challenge was telling his precocious granddaughter Violet Finn (Jophielle Love) about his disease and the fatal prognosis. In February, he broke the news to her with the help of both of his sons, Harrison and Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton).
Multiple times in the months leading up to the wedding, Gregory had a medical crisis, where he had trouble breathing and moving around. One time, he was with Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot), who demanded that he let her call an ambulance.
The General Hospital professor and journalist's priority was not to be a burden on anyone, and his focus was to make his family happy. In that chat with Tracy, he urged her not to argue with Lois (Rena Sofer) and Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) about the details of the wedding. The General Hospital star went toe-to-toe with the powerful Elliot, as Gregory said, “No more petty fighting… all that matters is those two beautiful souls belong together and we all do everything we can to make that happen.”

The day before the wedding, Gregory had an argument with Finn about his wedding to Jackie Templeton, as he skillfully went from being kind to yelling at his son in an instant.
And he debated with his youngest son, “Harry,” as he and Brook Lynn were concerned that he wouldn’t be able to go through with the ceremony after asking him to do so. Gregory assured them he could do it.
When the time came, Gregory stood behind the podium with the bride and groom holding hands in front of him. As soon as he began the ceremony, Gregory had trouble speaking. Harrison masterfully showed his character’s brain and voice start to malfunction without overdoing it, as his words gradually slowed down to a halt, and he froze while staring into space.
Just as skillfully, Harrison showed his character bouncing back after Tracy went to the altar to give him a pep talk. Harrison showed his character flip a switch, as Gregory Chase smoothly and confidently did the rest of the ceremony like a champion.
The rest was smooth sailing, as Gregory smiled through the entire reception, watching the newlyweds enjoy themselves, dancing with Brook Lynn, and spending time with his friends, whom he would never see again.

After, back at Finn’s apartment, Finn and his father had one final conversation when they thanked each other for being there for each other, and Finn told his dad that he taught him how to be a good dad to Violet. Then Gregory Chase went to bed, flashing back to memories of his family and friends as he dozed off for the final time in his life.
It can’t be easy for any older actor to show their character dying, as they have to look inward and face their own mortality to do that task some justice. Harrison, who turned 75 in May, won the hearts of General Hospital fans as they said goodbye to Professor Chase, and the minds of Emmy voters as well.
