Liesl Obrecht's complicated family tree is causing confusion for General Hospital fans of late, especially the fact that Nina keeps calling Nathan her brother. How can that be when Liesl is Nina's aunt and Nathan is Liesl's son? Let us explain.
Family ties on General Hospital

When Nathan (Ryan Paevey) was first introduced to the Port Charles scene, he was just the new cop in town, ready to sublet Maxie Jones' (Kirsten Storms) apartment, which is how he met the love of his life. Not long after, we learned he had a sister who had been in a coma for 20 years. For a short while, Nathan even believed his sister was dead, so imagine his surprise when she woke up and was thrilled to be reunited with her little brother, whom she called "J."
We soon learned that Nathan's real name was James Nathan Reeves and his mother was Madeline Reeves (Donna Mills), the same woman who drugged her pregnant daughter to make sure there were no new heirs to the Reeves fortune. She just wanted to induce a miscarriage, but Nina (then played by Michelle Stafford) ended up in a slumber for two decades. (We later discovered she had given birth to twins via c-section while in this coma.)
However, that wasn't the only surprise that Nathan was in store for. His family history was about to get a whole lot more complicated.
Hello, Mutter

After Nina woke and General Hospital fans were introduced to her high-strung mother, it was revealed that Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati)was Madeline's sister, making her Nina's aunt. That also meant that Nina and Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) were cousins, but wait — there's more.
It turned out that Madeline wasn't Nathan's biological mother after all. She might have raised him, but Liesl was his real mom. She gave her son to her sister to raise to keep him from his evil father, who she claimed was Victor Cassadine.
Despite learning that his mother was his aunt and his aunt was his mother, Nathan continued to think of Nina as his big sister. After all, that is what he remembered her as, and that was how they were raised.
At that point, Nathan thought he knew every secret. However, Nathan was in for another shock when Liesl finally revealed that Cesar Faison (Anders Hove) was Nathan's father, making him and Britt full siblings. Not long after, Faison shot Nathan (by accident), and he allegedly died. Now, a man who looks like Nathan is back, but Britt seems to know there is more to this man than meets the eye...
