An emotional conversation on General Hospital between Laura Collins and Sonny Corinthos on the Friday, January 9th episode evoked memories of the late Tony Geary. And it also had fans wondering if it was intentional, and if there would be more memories and tributes in the coming weeks.
In the General Hospital episode, Laura (Genie Francis) and Sonny (Maurice Benard) discussed the danger they are in from Sidwell (Carlo Rota) following the death of Henry Dalton (Daniel Goddard). They discussed Sidwell’s threat to frame Laura for Dalton's murder, and Laura told him about the implied threats Sidwell made to her family through Charlotte (Bluesy Burke), leading Kevin (Jon Lindstrom) to take Ace (Karis and Kieran Barry) to safety in Ireland.
Laura brought up her ex-husband, the late Luke Spencer, during the talk, and they discussed what Geary’s character would do to get out of this situation.
Laura was looking for Luke's advice on General Hospital

Sonny told Laura. “What you got to do is look at all the angles and just make sure you stay one step ahead of him.” Laura looked at him and responded, “Do you know who you sound like right now? The night that I found the body in my car, I was scrolling through all of the contacts in my phone, you know, trying to think who can I call about this? And I had the most strong and visceral impulse to call Luke.”
Later on, Laura lamented, “I just wish there was another way to protect my family. Every time I try to free myself, I feel Sidwell’s grip around my neck tightening. And I know that Luke felt that, too (when he was in danger). I know he did. But he found a way out. I just can’t help but feel if he were here with us, he would know what to do.”
The memories of Luke brought a lot of emotional reaction from General Hospital fans still freshly mourning the death of his iconic portrayer. On X, the fan @paula_30throad shared a clip of the episode and commented, “I LOVE Laura and Sonny’s friendship.” She complimented the chemistry between Benard and Francis and tagged them on X, adding “You complement each other so well. You are truly like old friends hanging out with each other in your scenes. You have a special bond.”
On X, the user @Tvchica said, “Laura mentioning Luke breaks my heart in so many pieces, I hate we lost Tony, I always felt Luke would have one more fight to win.”
@sollatina said, “Luke definitely would have found some damaging evidence on Sidwell or got him jammed up.”
General Hospital fan @port_misery added, “Sonny is Laura’s new Luke and Laura is Sonny’s new Jason. Someone go buy Sonny a vest and get Laura a leather jacket.”
@SourceRyan posted on X, “Awww Laura telling Sonny she had an impulse to call Luke the night she was in trouble and broke down from remembering he isn’t there to help her anymore.” @AgentScully64 replied to him, “I knew she was gonna say Luke (the) minute she started talking!”

Luke's legacy lives on in Port Charles
It’s unclear exactly when these scenes in the January 9th episode were filmed, though it’s likely it was before Geary’s death on December 14th. The General Hospital studio was dark for part of December during the holiday season. Some fans wondered on social media whether the showrunners found a way to quickly film and insert this scene after the new year.
Either way, scenes like this are a great way for General Hospital to honor Geary and his iconic character, reminding fans of how important Luke will always be to his family and friends in Port Charles.
On his X account, Benard reposted several posts from General Hospital fans commenting on the scenes, including one in which the commenter said the scenes “probably happened after the scenes were completed” Benard reposted it but didn’t reply to the fan.
On the Soap Central message board, the member SudswatchingNY said, “Laura in trouble with the mob…had to evoke memories of Frank Smith, Luke and their troubles. Luke was her partner and together they beat Frank Smith… thinking of him and wishing she could call him… subconsciously led her to Sonny.”
