General Hospital fans have been preparing to say goodbye to beloved matriarch Monica Quartermaine since January, when actress Leslie Charleson passed away at the age of 79. Now, it looks like Monica's time is nearing.

When Marty (Michael E. Knight) found an envelope full of crayoned scribbles addressed to Monica under a chair in Drew's (Cameron Mathison) living room, we wondered why Drew would have stolen Monica's mail. We soon learned that Wiley and Amelia may have taken it from the Quartermaines without thinking, so Drew told Marty he could toss the letter.

Marty being Marty, he did no such thing. Instead, he opened it and read it. While we didn't learn who it was from, the writer expressed concern with Monica's health. As Marty read on, a look of shock crossed his face, suggesting that there might be things from Monica's past that none of us had ever known.

Will Marty follow the breadcrumbs to learn about Monica's life before Port Charles, ushering in a mystery that leads to the character's inevitable death?

Since the start of the year, it's been clear that General Hospital plans to make Tracy (Jane Elliot) the new Quartermaine matriarch and the show has been positioning her for that role over the last few months. She is now the fierce family protector — and a fierce protector of Monica, a woman who was once her mortal enemy.

Tracy has been especially concerned with running Sonny (Maurice Benard) out of town after all these years, with her focus being on what he has taken from Monica, including both of her sons. He killed AJ in cold blood and introduced a vulnerable Jason (Steve Burton) to a life of crime in the 1990s. Jason is finally back under Monica's roof (after all, it's Monica's house because Alan gave it to her), with Tracy as his mother figure now.

With Tracy constantly going to bat for Monica and Marty finding a letter for her in Drew's home, will Monica's final storyline bring the battling duo of Tracy and Marty together to solve a mystery? If so, it's the perfect way to showcase two veteran ABC daytime stars as Port Charles and fans say goodbye to a beloved character we were not prepared to lose.
