When a soap, including General Hospital, starts projecting that there will be a shooting whodunit in January, but the shooting doesn't happen until September, there are going to be more suspects than you can count. That's the way it feels right now when it comes to 'Who Shot Drew Cain?' As the year went on, the suspect list just kept growing, and now it will take all the power of The Great Anna Devane to keep track of it all.
Cartoon character Cain

As the months passed this year, Drew became more of a cartoon villain than anything else. Every week, another heinous act could be added to a list of heinous acts. Last year, it seemed that Drew had just fallen for his nephew's wife, and although he was pretty gross about it, he wasn't yet evil. But by January, that all changed when he convinced his dimwitted new girlfriend to use her husband's third-degree burns as leverage to get her kids. Once you use someone's near-death experience as a bargaining chip, you enter a whole new category of hideous.
GH upped the ante over the last few weeks as Drew had an old lady arrested, took out a restraining order against two teenagers, and told his former mother-in-law that her daughter's wishes were irrelevant because she was dead. While those don't equate to attempted murder, the bad deeds kept adding up over the months, to the point where Drew was just mean, mean, mean.
He was threatening, menacing, creepy as can be, and didn't care who he threatened, hurt, or manipulated. He even emotionally abused his own young nephew — TWICE!
Threatening the newest big bad in town, Jenz Sidwell, certainly didn't do Drew any favors. That's when we knew he had gotten way, way too big for his britches. The power of elected office had gone to his head big time, to the point where he thought he could do whatever he wanted and get away with it. It's like a page ripped from the headlines where a smarmy, sex scandal-plagued politician abuses his power at every turn, and somehow stays in office. Except someone actually came for Drew. And that someone didn't miss. Quite the contrary. Whoever wanted Drew dead gave themselves an insurance policy by pumping a second bullet into his back when he was already down. There would be no fist pumps for Drew Cain. So, who done it? And can we give them a medal?
The usual (and unusual) suspects

Oh, where oh where, do we even begin? We guess with a list, so here it is:
-Willow
-Michael
-Nina
-Alexis/Natasha
-Sonny
-Carly
-Curtis
-Portia
-Martin
-Sidwell
One person who can immediately be eliminated is Jason, which is odd for two reasons. First, he is usually the first suspect in any Port Charles murder or attempted murder. Second, he may hate his twin brother more than anyone else. However, Jason was at an airport in Croatia when the crime occurred, so we know it couldn't have been him.
Of course, everyone now suspects each other, so alibis are lining up. Nina was sure she had to give Willow an alibi, but maybe she was just trying to establish her own. Alexis has her two accomplices in another crime as her alibi. Michael is searching for a mysterious blond woman at the Port Charles Grille who could possibly provide him with one.
Was Portia in Isaiah's bed before or after Drew was shot? We are not quite sure. We also have no idea where Curtis was, as we didn't see him meet Jordan until after Drew was brought into the ER.
Carly threatened Drew's life, and Elizabeth overheard, but we didn't see her again until she appeared in Jack's office after Drew was lying on his living room floor in a pool of blood.
One fan theory we saw that would be the ultimate gotcha is if Monica managed to get Yuri to drive her to Drew's so she could take care of the man who may have been Alan's son, but who was ready to bulldoze Alan's body, along with Edward and Lila's earlier this year. While we know that won't be the case (maybe?), it would be a fitting ending for one of the most badass women soaps have ever seen.
A story for Trina and Kai

Kai Taylor and Trina Robinson could have also been on the suspect list if they weren't upstairs hiding in Drew's bedroom when they heard the shots. So, we know neither one of them shot Drew, but will anyone else?
Leaving that baseball bat on the floor was not smart, Kai. We make a bet his prints are all over it. They are probably all over the safe, too, and who knows what else in Drew's Dawn of Day house?
But Kai and Trina actually have a story. And they are smack dab in the middle of the hottest story on the show. So, we say, "Bravo!"
Another shock for Alexis

Alexis thought she was going to have to prove she could walk and chew gum at the same time because her life is the hottest mess in town. She was not complaining that someone tried to take out Drew, but she was most concerned about her granddaughter. Under (relatively) normal circumstances, we would have wanted Alexis to take in Scout and fight for custody, but she has a bit of a problem in her basement.
As far as we know (we haven't seen him in over a week, and neither have Molly and Liz, but they don't seem to care), Ric is still tied to a gurney in Alexis' basement with Ava's ball gag in his mouth. A house guest like that may have made a child living there a bit inconvenient, which Kristina pointed out. Scout is used to weird, but this would have taken the cake. Imagine her wandering down to that basement and finding Ric down there begging for help.
Well, it's a good thing Drew thought of everything and made sure that Willow would be Scout's guardian in case anything happened to him. Yes, Willow, the character who is not even allowed to see her own kids. Alexis put on a happy face, bit her tongue, and gave Willow an overnight bag for Scout, but we knew Natasha was seething inside. Now, Scout is missing and likely won't want to live with the woman who walked out on her dad at the altar during a very "weird" wedding indeed.
Oh yeah, that stuff in Croatia...

Then, there's that other soap opera, completely disconnected from the happenings in Port Charles, we'll call Avenger Barbie Goes to Croatia. Joss spent another week in a tennis outfit, locked in a room, but hey, she got a pair of manicure scissors from Britt, and still managed not to escape. That's our Josslyn, WSB agent extraordinaire.
Jason did all those Jason things, like use his spidey senses to know bullets were coming. He still looks weird in blue resort wear, but we have a feeling he will end up back in Port Charles in a black tee by next week. Thank goodness.
Until then, Scoopers, when Scout inevitably turns up at the Quartermaine mansion and Jacinda gives Portia and Nina a run for their literal money.
