Adam J. Harrington surprised many General Hospital fans in 2024 when he brought FBI agent John “Jagger” Cates back to Port Charles, playing a role originated by Antonio Sabato, Jr. While Cates made some fans angry by doing questionable things in the pursuit of justice last year, many fans enjoyed Harrington’s take on the role and his piercing blue eyes.
Agent Cates waged war on Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) because of Sonny’s part in the overdose death of his wife Karen Wexler (Cari Shayne) three decades ago. Cates blackmailed Jason Morgan (Steven Burton) into working for him as an informant and stayed in Port Charles, trying to take down Sonny as part of his investigation into the mysterious Pikeman organization.
Harrington ruffled feathers on General Hospital as Agent Cates
Cates died on General Hospital after arresting Sonny’s daughter, Kristina (Kate Mansi), for allegedly assaulting Ava Jerome (Maura West) during the argument, which led to Kristina falling from Ava’s suite, killing her unborn baby Irene. Sonny shot and killed Cates at the Quartermaine boathouse after telling Cates he would surrender to him so he would leave Kristina alone. That marked the end of Harrington’s time on the show.
The Canadian actor announced his latest project last week. He starred on the July 9 episode of the new series Countdown on Amazon Prime.

Countdown, which debuted in June on Amazon Prime, stars former Days of Our Lives star Jensen Ackles, who is best known for 22 seasons of Supernatural. The series also stars Eric Dane and Jessica Camacho as they try to stop a terrorist from causing a nuclear meltdown in Los Angeles. According to IMDB, Ackles is “an LAPD officer (who) joins a secret task force to investigate a suspicious murder, but uncovers a sinister plot that requires the team to unite and save millions in the city.”
Harrington appears as Tim Carmichael in the July 9 episode, titled “Blurred Edges.” Based on the clip he shared, Harrington’s character is involved in some sort of political intrigue.
His former General Hospital co-stars cheered him on in comments on the post. Finola Hughes, whose Anna Devane regularly clashed with Cates, commented, “So great!!!” Cameron Mathison (Drew Cain) commented with clapping emojis. Dom Zamprogna (Dante Falconeri) said “Nice, buddy!” while Lydia Look (Selina Wu) said “Love! ❤️🔥❤️”

Harrington, 52, was born in Hamilton, Ontario. has appeared on dozens of TV shows, including Parks and Recreation, Bosch, Smallville, Supernatural, and multiple shows in the CSI and NCIS franchises. In an ironic coincidence to his role as Jagger Cates, Harrington appeared in six episodes of the xxx series The Mob Doctor as a federal agent.
