Playing a character on General Hospital for 40 years is an incredibly amazing feat. Finola Hughes fits that bill as she’s been playing super spy-turned-police commissioner Anna Devane since 1985. Over the years, she’s been in many great storylines on the soap, and continues to appear in frontburner storylines. She recently reminisced about her early days on the soap, and her fans loved every moment of it.
Americans Are Tall
Hughes and the talk show, LIVE with Kelly and Mark, shared a post on Instagram, with the caption, “😂 We’re honored @finolafilona showed both her eyes in our show! @generalhospitalabc.” The post also included a clip from her interview, which began with a General Hospital scene from April 1985 in which Anna had a conversation with the nefarious Jack Slater (Randall England). Back then, Anna had left the spy business and was a fence dealing in stolen jewels.
Hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos enjoyed the clip, and Ripa commented about Hughes’ big 1980s hair that was draped over one eye. “Oh my God, you know, I was hiding the one eye,” Hughes remarked, adding, “I was saving it because that was more money.” When asked what she recalled from that scene, she answered, “I just remember, like, ‘what does everybody eat in America because they're so tall. He was very tall.”
From spy to fence to police commissioner
Hughes added, “And I just remember thinking, ‘Ugh. I’m so short.’ ” She felt that to distract the audience from her height difference with England, she needed something more. “The other thing that I wanted was a lot of business because I sort of didn't want to deal with the fact that he was so tall and I was like, ‘can I have things to do?’ ” she hilariously remarked. In the scene, Anna was dealing in hot jewels, and she recalled, “They gave me a key, I think, to a drawer and a loop to look at the jewels.”
When asked about Anna’s then-job, Hughes explained, “I was a spy that worked for both sides during the Iron Curtain,” she remarked, hysterically continuing, “but now I'm police commissioner because that's what happens.” Anna’s certainly got her work cut out for her, dealing with various crimes in Port Charles.
