General Hospital's Kate Mansi opens up about Kristina's attempted murder

Kristina (Kate Mansi) has set in motion a chain reaction of trouble on General Hospital. But by inadvertently cutting Ric’s (Rick Hearst) brake lines -- Ava (Maura West) was the intended target -- she caused an accident that nearly killed him and Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). Ava found security camera footage that implicated Kristina, and she and Ric are now blackmailing her mom, Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn), for tons of money. Mansi recently revealed her thoughts on Kristina’s actions.

She feels alone

Let’s not forget that after Alexis learned of Kristina’s misdeed, she confided it to Diane (Carolyn Hennesy), who advised her to have Kristina committed. Although the papers were drawn up, Alexis decided not to file them at the last minute. However, a chance moment when Diane and Molly’s (Kristen Vaganos) papers got mixed up, the commitment file ended up in Molly’s bag.

Kristina wasn’t too happy when Molly found them and showed them to her, and Mansi told Soap Opera Digest, “She feels betrayed and disappointed,” adding that, “She’s really feeling very alone and abandoned and like she has to be, even more so, self-protective [around her mother].” Kristina has no idea that Alexis knows what she did, and she assumed her general erratic behavior was what caused her mom to want to send her to a mental institution.

A dark path

Mansi had no idea what the writers were planning for her, but she explained that she could see the writing on the wall that Kristina would be heading down a dark path. However, the General Hospital star mused that if her character had known all about the blackmail and that her mom was aware of her actions, “I think it would have meant something to her that Alexis had the foresight to protect Kristina’s relationship with her sister.”

She also explained that while Kristina and her brother Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) are so close, she should have told him about what happened. Unfortunately for her, he’s a police detective, so that avenue is out of the question. She also noted that while Kristina’s similarly close to her Dad, Sonny (Maurice Benard), “I think she would never tell her father [Sonny] because it’s too tricky with them.”

The actress remarked that Kristina feels burdened by the secret of what she did, but continues to maintain it so she doesn’t ruin her relationship with Molly. Ric, after all, is Molly’s father, and if she knew Kristina nearly killed him, she’d cut all ties forever. Mansi’s excuse for Kristina’s actions was simply that she’s “In such an impulsive spiral that she doesn’t quite, like, grasp things until the last second.” (Find out what Mansi thinks about a possible pairing of Lucky (Jonathan Jackson) and Kristina.)
