As Sonny battles the villainous Sidwell (Carlo Rota) for control of Port Charles’ piers on General Hospital, Maurice Benard is enjoying his best life. It’s evident that he’s been conquering his fears, as many of his posts on social media have announced various appearances around the country. Now that the actor, who has extensively discussed his bipolar disorder, flies in airplanes without worry, he’s become even more accessible to fans who want to see him in person. His latest video showed him sharing a hitherto unknown talent with fans at a recent event, with hilarious results.
Who knew he was a famous singer/songwriter?
On Instagram, General Hospital’s Maurice Benard posted, “I wrote this song back in 1970 i’m singing it now for all the fans.” He then listed where he would be appearing, which included “Pottstown, Philadelphia, Richmond, Virginia, as well as stops in North and South Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia.
Along with the post was a video of him on stage at an event where he asked, “You ready?” and the audience came back with a resounding, “Yeah!” that came with applause. He prepared himself, and just as a slight smirk appeared on his face, he began to sing a parody of the Steve Miller Band song, The Joker. “Some people call me the space cowboy,” he began, as many fans began chuckling when they realized what he was doing.
Hilarity ensued

General Hospital’s Benard continued, “Yeah, some call me the gangster love. Some people call me Maurice. Because I speak of the pompatus of love.” He then diverged into funny parody lyrics with, “People keep talking about me and Brenda…” which drew a huge laugh from the crowd. He continued, doing his best Steve Miller, with, “Say I'm doing you wrong, but don't you worry, don't worry, don't worry, Brenda, because Carly’s at home.” At this, the audience was roaring with laughter.
Brenda was played by Vanessa Marcil and is widely considered one of Sonny’s great loves. His other great love was with Carly (Laura Wright), and his subtle mention of her was hilarious. Off to the side could be seen the shadow of someone on guitar, and it was most likely Benard’s son Joshua, who had been traveling and performing with his dad. @amy.johnson.9465177 commented, “Great job! Like Son like Father. New fan of his and very long time fan of yours on GH (was watching you and Brenda day 1 and still can’t help it, I love you guys together!).”
Amidst the loving heart emojis was great praise for Benard’s attempt at singing, and the fans were very clear that they don’t want the actor to ever leave General Hospital.
General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC and Hulu.
