General Hospital star Cameron Mathison, along with other soap stars, lost their homes to the Palisades and Altadena fires in the Southern California area on January 7, 2025. On the first anniversary of his tremendous loss, Mathison is recalling the tragic event that affected so many.

General Hospital, real-life tragedy

"A year since the fire," Mathison posted on Instagram. "Loss changed us. Love carried us. Sending so much love to all those affected 🙏🏼💔."

The loss of his home and so many cherished memories wasn't the only life-changing event that Mathison endured. In recent years, the actor got a divorce from his wife, Vanessa; his children moved away to attend school; Mathison's TV series, Home & Family, which he hosted with Debbie Matenopoulos, had been canceled, and the actor's beloved dog, Red, passed away.

Additionally, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer, which, fortunately, was caught in time. Throughout this, Mathison maintained his friendly demeanor, which he is known for throughout the daytime and TV community.

On January 8, 2025, Mathison took to Instagram to let everyone know who had been checking in to see how he was doing, that he had escaped the fire, but that his home had not. "We are safe, but this is what’s left of our beautiful home," he shared. "Our home, where our kids were raised and where they wanted to raise their own someday. Thanks to all who reached out and checked in. Can’t respond to all, so wanted to give an update here."

Aftermath and staying busy on General Hospital

Two weeks after the fire, Cameron Mathison and Vanessa Mathison shared a post that originated on Vanessa's account. It read, in part: "The grief of losing our home is devastating and crushing. Our home was not just walls and things...it was the physical representation of the deep love we have for our children.

"It was the house where our children grew up. It held memories of birthday celebrations, Christmas, baking, tamale-making, best friend sleep-overs, teenage hangouts, family and friend gatherings, and quiet movie nights," Vanessa continued. "It was music at all times… Lucas on his drums, Leila on her piano.

"We had hard times, as well as the most loving and meaningful experiences of our lives in this home," Vanessa shared. "The loss of irreplaceable items hurts the most… We have come together as a family to heal. As our son, Lucas, said four days after the fire…'We’re going to be ok❤️❤️❤️.'"

General Hospital kept Mathison busy with a front-burner storyline. Of course, Drew's wicked ways pale in comparison, some might say, to other kidnappers, killers, and mobsters in Port Charles, but that didn't stop someone from taking a shot at the congressman.

Along with manipulating Willow (Katelyn MacMullen), Drew's most heinous act has been manipulating little Wiley (Viron Weaver) and keeping Scout (Cosette Abinante) from her late mother's (Sam, played by Kelly Monaco) family.

Additionally, Mathison launched a new health initiative, Health 360, and shot another holiday movie with Candace Cameron Bure, Another Sweet Christmas.
