General Hospital actress Finola Hughes and the late Anthony Geary crossed Port Charles like ships in the night in the 1980s and 1990s, but the 2000s were a different story. Their respective characters, Anna and Luke, were paired together in storylines involving adventure and drama. Now, Hughes is paying tribute to her late co-star, who died on December 14, at the age of 78.

General Hospital, remembering Anthony Geary

"The original," Hughes began an Instagram post that included a photo of herself and Geary. "He took my breath away, so magical, creative, fearless. The thing of legend. So glad I spent time with you and [your husband] Claudio in Amsterdam for a couple of summers.

"The best host, conversationalist, deep thinker, witty, kind raconteur," Hughes continued. "Deeply mischievous, naturally, my kids adored you. Thank you, Tony, for the really, really good times, for sharing your heart and spirit. Claudio, I love you, we send our hugs.

"I’m always going to think of Tony out on the canals in his boat, slowly sailing through Amsterdam," Hughes concluded. "GOAT 🕊️."

When Luke met Anna

Hughes and Geary have both experienced GH at different times. Hughes debuted in 1985, the year after Geary and Genie Francis (Laura) did their last guest spot on the show before returning full-time in 1993. They both just missed Hughes, who had exited in 1992 and didn't return to General Hospital full-time until 20 years later in 2012. (She had popped up on ABC sister soap All My Children, playing both Anna and her twin, Alexandra Devane).

Luke and Anna first met in 2006 on the Maarkam Islands. The two characters crossed paths years later when Anna helped rescue Luke after he'd been kept a prisoner in a mental institution. Anna also came to Luke's aid after he'd been kidnapped (thanks to Heather Webber, then Robin Mattson). Heather shot Anna during that rescue attempt. Later, Luke and Anna danced around a romance in 2015, but it never truly went anywhere.

Ironically, Anna's other love interest, Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers), fell for and married Holly Sutton (Emma Samms), Luke's one-time love.

Luke was famous for having nicknames for the people closest to him; he called Lucky (Jonthan Jackson), his son, "Cowboy." He referred to Lulu (Julie Marie Berman; now Alexa Havins), both "Cupcake" and "Gumdrop." He had one for Anna, too, calling her, "Slim." While Anna and Luke were far from the great loves of each other's lives, the two characters enjoyed a close personal friendship just as their portrayers did.
