General Hospital hired Daniel Goddard earlier this year to play the role of the enigmatic Dr. Henry Dalton, and, in doing so, set the stage for a reunion between the actor and Genie Francis, who plays Laura. She played Genevieve, Cane's mother, and the ex-wife of Colin Atkinson (Tristan Rogers). The character ran the gamut during her relatively short stay in Genoa City. The role came about after the show's head writer/executive producer, Maria Arena Bell, at the time, had spotted Francis on an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Considerably darker than GH's Laura, Genevieve had a dark side, and Francis embraced the part. As time went on, viewers saw softer sides to Genevieve through her romance with Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman). During her time in Genoa City, Genieve was also involved in both business and personally (briefly) with Victor Newman (Eric Braeden). In the summer of 2012, there was a regime change at Y&R. Arena Bell was out, and the show's new head writer was Josh Griffith (he's now the show's current head writer, too), and Jill Farren Phelps became executive producer. Francis left Y&R a few months later. The CBS soap's loss was General Hospital's gain. Francis came back in time for the program's 50th anniversary in 2013. The actress came back to the series in 2015 on a more permanent basis. There have been a few breaks and vacations, but she's remained with the show ever since.
