General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason) and Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) blazed a trail with their traveling comedy show. They started a podcast called That’s Awesome! and continued their hilarious antics by touring. Maurice Benard, who has been open about having bipolar disorder, created a wildly popular YouTube series called State of Mind which brought mental health awareness to the forefront. And co-star Laura Wright (Carly) has something called Sacred Space, which is not a show per se, but is a series of Zoom events she holds with fans that serve as a way for her to share insights and techniques so fans can learn to deal with life’s challenges.

People want to hear her words

General Hospital’s Laura Wright was a guest on State of Mind and talked about why she’s getting into the mental health arena. “I want to be a resource for people to show them what they have inside themselves,” she stated, adding, “That to me is everything.” She explained her rationale was because she would fight the voice in her head that told her no one was interested in what she had to say. But she disproved that to herself because every time she goes to a fan event, they’re hanging on her every word and look to her for guidance and solutions. She admitted that she doesn’t have solutions for people, but rather serves as a sounding board for the fans.

Benard told her that after observing her in action, the secret to the General Hospital star’s success would be that she’s a great storyteller. “I'm very passionate and I believe um life is short. We got one shot at it,” she explained, stating that some people don’t have anywhere to go “in that pit of hopelessness, and if I can give someone something to be hopeful for, if I can give them something to look forward to, if I can teach them that there's something they can do every day for themselves to be hopeful…I love that.”

She understood despair

“I was there,” Wright stated, adding, “I was medicated for a certain time. I was on Zoloft and on anti-depressants…for a situation,” noting that the medication was, “very necessary at the time.” She further explained that everyone was entitled to their pain and should be allowed to feel it for a short time. But then, she would ask when they are going to let that pain go, “And step into your awesomeness, right? Because it's there.”

General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC and Hulu.
