It’s been an awful couple of weeks for General Hospital’s Gio (Giovanni Mazza). He learned the startling truth that his parents were not who he thought they were for his whole life. When Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) was a teenager at camp, she and a teenage Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) hooked up, and she got pregnant. Not prepared to become a mother, her mother Lois (Rena Sofer) and grandmother Gloria (Ellen Travolta) made the command decision to secretly give the child to the Palmieris, who were close relatives and desperately wanted a baby.

Eventually, Gio learned the truth of his origins and had a complete emotional breakdown as a result. Mazza explained what went into portraying all those mixed feelings.

He didn’t know he had it in him

Mazza spoke with Soap Opera Digest and was asked if he knew he had the moxie to be able to pull off all of the complicated emotions that Gio’s mind was racing through. He thought about it for a bit and then remarked that he felt he had been working toward Gio's big moment. But the General Hospital star examined his mindset and further stated, “I didn’t know that I had it in me, but I’ve never experienced something like this before.”

Using some personal experience as well as his inner creativity, the actor had asked himself, if what was happening to Gio happened to him, how would he respond? He further noted that after reflecting on what his real-world reaction would be, “I sort of connected to that feeling of vulnerability, of the rug being pulled out from under me, and I built up all the momentum and then I just let it go, and whatever happened happened.”

That certainly left fans with several powerful scenes that have them murmuring that a possible Daytime Emmy nomination would be in the young actor’s future.

He shared the scenes with family and friends

On General Hospital, Gio was supposed to play the tango on his violin as Chase (Josh Swickard) and Anna (Finola Hughes) danced to it. But unable to focus after overhearing the harsh truth about his secret origin, he instead smashed his beloved violin on the stage, shocking everyone in the audience.

The actor happily explained how he was happy when the scenes aired because the scenes with Gio destroying his violin aired on Mazza's birthday. He invited friends to watch the episode with him, and also viewed it with his mother. "She was crying, and I was crying,” he explained. Proud of his work, he further remarked that, “It’s been really fun to watch it.”
