Although he’s relatively new to General Hospital, Adrian Anchondo’s Marco has already been through the ringer. Because his dad, Sidwell (Carlo Rota), allegedly had Charlie’s Pub torched, nearly killing Kristina (Kate Mansi) in the process, Sonny (Maurice Benard) sought revenge. He had Marco kidnapped and worked over a little bit so that Sidwell would back off from his plan to oust Sonny from Port Charles. That worked, but Sidwell has sworn that he’ll retaliate. Anchondo was the latest guest on Benard’s mental health show, State of Mind, and revealed important parts of his past.

Raised by Grandparents

General Hospital’s newest star, Adrian Anchondo, explained that his mother had him when she was 18 years old, so “I was basically raised by my grandparents because my mom was so young.” He added that in a sad turn of events, “My mom ended up having my brother and moved to New York and left me with my grandparents.” Ultimately, he and his grandparents moved to Puerto Rico.

Although he missed his mother, he stated that he and his grandparents made some wonderful memories there, living in a mountainous region. He further explained that his grandmother was irritated by the situation and told him that they would bring him to New York. They ultimately moved to Brooklyn, and Anchondo, “Got to be with my brother again and then met my stepfather.”

His troubled past was fraught with trauma, and the General Hospital actor explained, “I was haunted by Freddy Krueger when I was younger. Like, I had nightmares that were so…I was seven or eight. It was bad.” With the perspective of adulthood now in his purview, Anchondo explained, “I think that at that age, Freddy Krueger was also like my stepfather. Like, he kind of represented my stepfather. I just didn’t understand it at that time.”

“I would have, like, very realistic nightmares and feel the pain,” he stated, adding, “My body would be vibrating when I would wake up.” He recalled being religious and praying often. “I was like, ‘I want to dream about Freddy. I'm ready to dream about him,'” he explained, further noting that the next time he dreamed about the horror movie villain, “I went up to him and I hugged him. And then I never had another nightmare again.”

Benard was truly excited at the thought that Anchondo was able to face down his fear with a simple hug.

General Hospital can be seen weekdays on ABC and Hulu.
